Water pump hole

Unread post by Auzziemutt » February 16th, 2019, 10:19 pm

HI all. My A2 water pump died so I replaced it, piece of cake , easy job. However when I refilled the radiator, water poured out from under the gasket near the fourth hole in the casting near the left hand bolt. I replaced the gasket and refilled again with the same result. All surfaces were clean and gasket goo (don't know what you call it) applied , bolts done up firmly, leak was in same place. Gasket replaced for a third time and water doesn't leak out. what I'm wondering is , what is the other hole in the pump casing for because that's where the leaks were. It's about an inch from the 9 o'clock bolt, on the inside only with a matching hole in the block into the water jacket. My guess is it's a pressure relief duct but I've never seen one before and have replaced many water pumps .If it leaks again can I permanently plug this hole without damaging something ? Thanks.

The pump is not interfering with one of the timing cover bolts is it? This is very common on replacement pumps and all you need to do is grind a little clearance in the pump body where it is hitting the bolt head. I do not know of any extra holes in the pump other that the weep hole at the fan shaft.
I just went out and looked at one of my spare engines and I only have three holes in the pump to the block. No room for anything else so if you have something else would need to see a pic of it.

Per Ricks statement on grinding, link to threads/photo to show example. Also talk of impeller interference.

Nothing to it. Just following directions.
Search for keywords:
Place + in front of a word which must be found and - in front of a word which must not be found. Put a list of words separated by | into brackets if only one of the words must be found. Use * as a wildcard for partial matches.

It appears we have found the problem. One of the bolt holes had a short bolt in it and about half of the threads in the block were so gunked up with rust scale etc. that when I tightened that one up it got tight when it still had a few turns to go, so that part of the pump housing was able to leak. I've never come across that before. Thanks for your help men.

I forgot to say , as you probably guessed, the thread was cleaned out with a thread cutting die, like new.

That is why it is always a good idea to blow out and run a tap into all bolt holes, especially in older engines.
