Interior paint for camo jeep

Unread post by mutt and jeff » August 29th, 2020, 7:36 pm

Not seeing what I need in the MERDC camo info, so here I am again. My experience base on the WWII vehicles is that they left the factory flat od green and if some went to the Navy, they painted the visible surfaces battleship grey, but under the hood, inside engine compartment, tool boxes, underneath, etc., would be the factory od green.

I need to refresh all the paint on my 1966 A1, but the interior could not get camo, just the exterior. So, would the interior be left the factory semi gloss green shade and the camo on the exterior flat camo colors? Or would the entire jeep be sprayed with the flat dark green base and then the exterior three colors of light green, black and sand be painted?

And, on a related subject, if I do my M762 flat bed trailer to match, were the trailers ever camo? Or would they just be left the semi gloss dark green correct for the year? These would both be Army vehicles, not Marines. If the trailer got a camo treatment, would the flat bed top be camo? Or just the narrow sides and fender surfaces and the trailer bed left dark green?

Thanks for any direction. I've got the templates and colors for the camo and the history of the MERDC scheme and the application method, just need some interior instructions.

Thanks in advance.

The 3/4-ton flatbed trailer (M762) was a USMC issue vehicle, not Army.

In the Marine Corps Guide to Camouflage Paint Patterns NAVMC2666 dated 03-Jan-1977, pages 72-75, the index lists this trailer using the same 4-colour pattern as the standard M416 trailer. If you don't intend to place any fixture permanently on the flat bed, then the whole of the flatbed should be pattern-painted.

I think you mentioned before that you wanted to paint the 66 camo for a reason but just in case I just want to mention that the original color for a 66 Army 151 would be solid green, inside, outside and underneath.

Yes, I am representing a one star Army National Guard jeep in the late '70's and the MERDC summer pattern is what I am going with on jeep and trailer. I will need to research the M762 in more depth as I though it was both a Army and Marines trailer, although the Marines used more of them. If it was an exclusive Marines trailer, then I may have to rethink either the use of it with my MUTT or paint it Marines green and represent that the National Guard was just "borrowing" it for the day. I also realize that a one star jeep would probably never tow a trailer, but this is parade representation only.

So, if the interior of the MUTT was also painted camo, would my two radios also be painted to match the interior pattern? Or, would things like radios, jerry cans and pioneer tools just be left their original colors as they were swapped on and off the vehicle?

And, would I leave under the hood alone and just camo what can be seen from the outside? Under the hood and engine compartment is not flaking off or needs to be repainted other than to match, if necessary, the camo flat paint colors.

Keep in mind that the tactical vehicles (like your M151) had removable tops, in the thinking that in a combat environment, you would be looking all around. Add in the ability to un-ass the truck if conditions warranted.....

When the canvas top is off, the camo pattern would be visible on the now-exposed interior surfaces. So, yes, the pattern would extend to the insides as well as outside.

I do not recall seeing an engine compartment that was camo'd. The underside of the hood would be painted the major exterior color, OD or Forest Green. Radio mounts were usually left in their "as-shipped" color, to avoid paint contamination on contact surfaces. The M4 pedestal mount, on the other hand, was painted as the rest of the interior.

Hope this helps.
