Engine overhaul

Unread post by Flyboy740 » January 25th, 2009, 5:49 pm

Here's a question for those that have done this in the past. Is there a site where I can get the gaskets and seals for a complete M151 overhaul?

I would recommend Saturn Surplus... they're great!

Second on Saturn. If your motor is bad it would be cheaper to just find a good T/O. These were tough little motors and did not go bad all that often so finding a good used one is not all that hard.

This is a spare engine that looks like it's in good shape. After I get it done and if it turns out good, I'm going to put it in my jeep and overhaul the one that is coming out.

A good mechanic could rebuild the engine cheaper than you could buy a T/O.

I had mine rebuilt, they polished and ported the head, cleaned out all the insides, cleaned the pistons, macined a few parts, and it only ran me around (if i remember correctly) $900 - $1000.

With the rebuild, i got 84hp.

Food for thought.

Eric, You better hold on to that mechanic! The machine work alone, Boring, line hone, Decking if needed, valve job, cam bearings, Magnafux and hot tank would run close to what you paid. I generally get 500.00 for disassembly, prep for machining, reassembly and testing. T/O's can be found for 350.00 to 600.00. Then you have the rings, bearings, gaskets and seals.

Some time ago I bought two used engines for $ 100.00 each. Kept one and rebuilt it.
The engine had very little time on it but had been abused in storage so I had no idea of its internal condition when we opened up.

The machine shop time to inspect, clean, magnaflux reinstall bearings ,crank, cam and pistons was around $ 600.00.

I reassembled the engine with new head, oil pump flywheel, water pump, carb, oil pan, valve cover, wires, plugs freeze plugs etc. A ton of work on my part. By the time it was done I'll bet you that I spent $ 1500.00 .
It was a learning experience and it now sit in the garage waiting to be used some day or to be sold at the garage sale sale after my passing.
