I don't have one in mine so I can't speak for the efficiency but consider that the stock thermostat was a 160 degree and there is half the problem! In the winter you could run a 190 with no problem at all but run at least a 180 year round and you will have better heat and it will also run much better. You will find that the infamous flat spot will usually disappear.

i ran a 180 thermostat in my A1, but the heater, which i installed NOS, was not much help. i even had full canvas installed. now i am wondering if i also put the hoses on wrong, even though i was following the manual step by step. can't check now, sold it a while back.
