The only thing that I could think was worse is installing a heater in an A2 with a ROPS!
25 years ago had to install a heater in my newly acquired jeep.
How was I to know that it was a challenge?
Persistence finally paid off!

I just finished installing the heater in my '77 A2 w/ ROPS. What a nightmare. I'm a metal tech in the air force and very used to contorting my body into awkward positions and performing meticulous tasks by braille, but I came to the conclusion that whoever designed this assy had a hate-on for life. I feel sorry for the poor shmucks at the units who had to install several of these. However, I will share some points to make the job a little easier for the next guy...

- remove as much from in behind the dash board as you can before you begin.
- do not assume the measurements of the hole placement in the TM instructions are accurate. By all means mark them, but do not drill a single hole until you dry fit the parts first. Measure twice, cut once.
- use a socket with extensions on a cordless drill to quickly tighten the hose clamps before your fingers go numb and inevitably let everything go.
- attach the driver's side defroster hose to the diffuser assy prior to attaching the assy to the steering column. Actually, clamp as many hoses as possible prior to placement because they're all buried.
- with the ROPS in the way I was forced to bend back the 1/2" flange of the air box where it meets the motor assy to allow the unit to slide in and mate. There is absolutely zero wiggle room there to shimmy the thing in otherwise. This is probably wrong, but by this point my GAF was super low and I did what I had to do.

There's probably more tips out there, but these are the ones that jumped into my head as I write this.

If I could add one tip to gcbennet's excellent guidance on heater install: Be certain to replace bolts that tie components ( air box, motor, brackets, etc.) together with proper length bolts lest you damage the heater coil!

Just in time for the next arctic blast which, according to the news, is definitely on the way! I expect a full report on how well that heater works, man!

Cheers,

She puts out a decent amount of heat, at least a bit better than my Humvee. The blood, aches, and relentless cursing may have been worth the effort.

If you don't already have a 80 degree thermostat in the engine put one in. If you are in cold country it would not hurt at all to go with a 190 and switch back to a 180 come summer.

I just looked at your location, Yea, you ARE in cold country!!!! I would definitely put a 190 thermostat in the engine for winter. You will get much better heat. And get the winter front or a piece of cardboard to cover half the radiator.
