Tires

Postby sherwan_88 on January 13th, 2010, 9:16 am

I have found a good set of 4 radial tires with tubes and rims in size 31 X 10.50 R 15. Its cheap deal. $200, they fit perfectly and the turning cycle and steering is unaffected but sure takes a lot of muscle to get them turning.
My question is, would there be any problems running them? suspension steering linkage extra wear and tear, any risk of something breaking? to sum it up, would they be safe to run and won't be a problem?

My opinion tire is too big for Mutt....My dad always said if it was supposed to have big tires on it they would have put them on at the factory...small engine and drive line, will it stand the grip of such a big tire?...............htn

The drive line will stand up because the engine is so small but in the same light you are going to lose a lot of power because of the extra diameter. Also those tires are way to wide for a stock rim. You need a minimum of an 8" rim for that tire.

The deal is for alloy rims and tires, pretty good deal for a used set thats what got me thinking, since the objective is to make the mutt as much civi as possible without spending a lot of dough.
Would there be any problems with steering setup going soft sooner than expected?

it would seem to me that the harder you have to crank on the wheel, the more stress you'll put on the parts involved. This would seem to me to accelerate wear ....

Porta walls????
Yes the tie rods and steering linkage is going to wear faster. As far as turning you are probably going to have interference between the tires and the fenders. Keep an eye on the steering box to frame bolts and make sure they stay tight.

That much of extra beef is going to take its toll on the brakes too. That wide, your offroading capability will be affected too, as I think the tire would be wide and hit the fender trim. You want to go for a civvy look ?, paint the rims black.

well the idea is to let every swinging baseball bat and balls down here to see i've got a barbie jeep and keep the dogs off my back. I don't want to get into a worthless rant, but don't know about you but up here its not easy, small city, big garrison, stupid made up laws whatever...

I'll get the pictures up as soon as i get the tires on. Oh for off-road i just switch to ND's, wont be trading them in.

HTN,
You got that right, put up porta walls all around the mutt and no one can see whats underneath! neat idea! well will sure get people thinking if its a green house on wheels or what.

Rick,
you mean interference from the notch or the trim of the fenders?
Thanks for the help.

Sherwan, the critical thing is called backset, that is the distance from the flat side of the inside of the rim measured to the top side of the tire sidewall...What I usuall do is lay the tire and wheel down with the inside faceing up then lay a bar or wood scrap across the tire and measure from the inner rim where the bolts go thru yp to the bottom of the bar or stick ...this is called backset...if it is too deep the tire will hit the steering parts and rub...if too shallow it will be hard to steer and wear out your ball joints....the backset on a stock rim is 5 and 1/2 inches so in order not to rub you would need less backset which in turn sets wheel to the outside....I took a set of stock wheels and cut the rivets out and mounted in my press to hold and rewelded them and welded up the rivet holes so I could use them on a willys, it worked great sorry I don't have a photo of this as it looked neat, yes I did have to open th center hole up allittle so it would slide on the hub.....end....

Sherwan

Porta walls are fake white walls that you put on black wall tires. They were popular back in the 1950's and early 1960's here in the U.S. They look cool on old antique cars.

If you put a set on, you will need a set of outer trim rings and some baby moons. Baby moons are small chrome hub caps that only cover the very center of a wheel. Here is a pic of a wheel with porta walls, rings and baby moons.

Raymond: I had porta walls on a 39 Chevy in high school that cost $75.
They cost $4 a set in 1954. Baby moons also cost $4 for a set of four.
I was mowing lawns with a push-mower for $1.50.
Geeze...I'm feeling old, and need to lie down for a nap.
