underframe kit

Postby 67mutt on February 6th, 2010, 1:27 pm

Just found, and ordered a large underframe kit. Any one have experience with these? Are the outer frame rails and crossmembers complete replacements, or are they intended to be installed over the old frame rails? Probably wont be installing them for a while, (maybe in the fall,) as the originals have some perforation rust, but aren't real bad yet. Kind of a "get it while it can be had" purchase. The worst area is where the hitch and bumperettes bolt on. Wouldn't trust it with a trailer I don't think.

I had one of those kits installed under a '67 A1 and from what I was to understand, (didn't do the welding) those "patch" panels were supposed to go over the old ones. The shop that did the work for me wound up fabricating all new replacement "rails" and cross members to go under there instead. Looked factory. Good luck with your project.

If memory serves you were to cut out all the rusted out pieces and you hav ta grind down to bare metal just like you would for any welding maybe someone has the instructions that came with the kits. Scott out

The old rails are removed first.

The instructions that came with mine had little to do with the actual repair work and more to do with making a jig to hold the body while repairing it.

Making a jig would be helpful. Was it the "rotissery" type? Storage after the project may be difficult though. Thanks Everyone for your replies.

No it wasn't (wish it was). That was a few years ago so I don't really remember much about those "instructions." The shop I used wound up doing the repair work a different way. Here's a link to a company that sells rotisseries and other useful items. http://www.accessiblesystems.com/index.php

I've been wondering if my "large" underbody repair kit wasn't missing some stuff (namely instalation instructions)
