Washing Gasoline?

Postby toptiger on February 9th, 2010, 2:55 pm

On SS there was post in the Mule section about how to 'wash' gasoline to get the ethanol out of it. Put water in the fuel, slosh it around, let it sit, then skim the 'good' gas off the top as the water and dissolved ethanol settle to the bottom.
As noted in one of my prior posts, I have had to replace fuel pumps in all my old vehicles. Since then I have been running 100LL avn fuel {no additives- doesn't go sour}. There is a nearby fuel dump that carries it for the air boat guys. 4.70 a gallon but I don't run my three 1960s {my A2 is an early pre-emmisions 72} vehicles that much and they sit for months at a time.
Any comments on washing our current ethanol added gasoline? Never heard of this before but it makes sense.
and as a bonus, Seabee could then drink the ethanol cocktail!

Gasoline and ethanol are both organic solvents and don't normally like to seperate. It usually requires a method called solvent extraction. In the case of alcohol/gasoline you add water (the solvent) to cause the alcohol (the solute) to come out of suspension from the gasoline(the raffinate). This is because alcohol has both a hydrophyllic (water loving) and hydrophobic (water hating) portions to it's molecular structure. This is why alcohol can be added to fuel that has a small amount of water in it to "dry" it out, ala Heet gas treatment. It does so by holding the water in suspension with the gasoline forming a colloid. The affinity or solubility of alcohol is stronger for water than for gasoline and if enough water is added to a gasoline/alcohol mixture, the water/alcohol portion will undergo a phase seperattion from the gasoline. From there it is a matter of simple distillation or mechanical seperation to remove the gasoline from the alcohol/water mixture.

Raymond, Do you realize that you just explained the mess I had in those picture a while back of the gas and alcohol separated from my air compressor?

Yes, I remember that. I kind of gave the same explanation then. I paid attention in organic chemistry. I learned enough to be fairly dangerous

So if you seperate the gas from the alcohol, how much gas do you get? Better yet, how much of one gal of gas remains after washing?
