Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
Rear main seal is leaking unbearably.

In the picture on the page in the above leak, I see a Sleeve, part 9. Is that necessary? Or is it when the crank is scored?
Does anyone know of a part number so I can find one local? Or are they order only?

Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
i bought my rear main seal from blake at red river parts and did not use a sleeve. there has been no leakage noted at this point, 6 months down the road. i don't know the answer to the second part of your question, but i'm sure someone here will.
Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
Be sure to check your fording valve or pcv valve are not pluged. If there is any back pressure it will cause the seal to leak.

Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
I'll check that asap. It leaks very bad. We put a new seal in, and started it. It leaked within 5 minutes... Bad enough I won't run the motor till I can fix it.!

Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
Welcome Mcinfantry, search this forum for main seal threads and you will find much info to help, the seal kit is available from most of the normal suppliers like Red River, TJ Murry, Army Jeep Parts etc. It is always a good idea to replace the sleeve with the seal, no matter how it looks.

Thanks, I spent the better part of the last two days searching:csmith wrote:Welcome Mcinfantry, search this forum for main seal threads and you will find much info to help, the seal kit is available from most of the normal suppliers like Red River, TJ Murry, Army Jeep Parts etc. It is always a good idea to replace the sleeve with the seal, no matter how it looks.

I was unable to locate any answer and reluctantly posted this question (I'm on a few forums like cummins swaps and am familiar with repetitive questions). I apologize for it.
I was mostly curious if there was A civilian part number for either, but I am familiar enough with m38a1, m35, m715 and my currently wrecked 42 dodge wc53 to realize that the surplus can be far far cheaper. But I'm also aware rubber seals deteriorate with ozone from the day they are mad so a 30 year old tire or seal, is not the same as a new one.
And I have been getting VERY VERY good info here!
I see some people sell the sleeve, some do not, and some diagrams show it, and some do not.

Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
If the seal comes with a sleeve you will have to use the sleeve unless there is one on there already and it is not scored. In that case you could use the old sleeve. The seals I have used did not come with a sleeve. Usually if it has a sleeve the seal will be a little larger in diameter and will leak badly if used without the sleeve. The differential seals are this way. I know of no civvie replacement but the normal dealers have them fairly cheap. Where are you located? As was said earlier, make sure your fording valve is in the open (forward) position if you have one.

No fording valve... This is a total rebuild, rotisserie, body, mechanical, etc.... and luckily i decided to check for leaks before I totally got it back together....
I appreciate the help. Im sorry if I come off short.... Not my intention.

Try Bernie, A & B Enterprises, kcgonzo@aol.com, (302) 740-7506. Sometimes hard to get a hold of but has a good inventory and fair prices.

Sorry but I'm confused Are we talking about internal ingine "sleeve" or piston or pumpkin? I've got kits of seals and stuff and I just want to get a better picture of what we're talking about so I can determine whether or not I've got anything that can help

Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
I also did some checking and all of the seals I have are for no sleeve. I am curious where that picture came from. I called Bernie AKA KC Gonzo, and he told me you had already called and he offered you the standard seal but you want the one with sleeve. My advise would be to use the standard part unless the crankshaft is scored. It is entirely possible that you may have damaged the last seal putting it in. If it is not perfectly straight going in then it will leak.

Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
With the engine running at idle, the oil is pouring out.
If you turn on your faucet to where it is a steady stream, not a drip... It leaks that bad. I would take a video, but it's too bad.
I agree, it COULD be user error. That's why my intention is to buy the sleeve, oversized seal and standard seal. So when I pull it, I SHOULD be able to fix it.

Re: Rear Main Seal And Sleeve
Are you sure it is the main seal? I have seen some good leaks from rear mains but none that run out. That sounds like a crack in the block or a galley plug missing. I do not remember if there is a plug at the back of the camshaft.
