M151A2 battery dimensions

Unread post by Litz » March 11th, 2008, 1:19 pm

I was looking over at the other site for old threads that talked about battery sizes, types etc. My search came up with several threads, but none seemed to have exactly what I was looking for on dimensions.

I don't have any original military issue batteries for a M151A2 and what I would like to know is what are the exact dimensions of the military issue batteries that were used in the M151A2?

If anyone has knowledge of these dimensions or has original batteries, please let me know what the dimensions are; height (withandwithouttheheightofthetopposts),width and length.

Thanks,
Litz

the dimensions i have for the 2HN battery used in M151's are:

10.250 length, 5.500 width, 9.000 height. dont know if the height is the case or the terminals.

the closest size civilian battery is the 22NF. its dimensions are:

9.400 length, 5.500 width, 8.938 height. so will fit in the standard mutt brackets.

No matter what civilan battery you are looking for. For a 24 volt system you will need to modifie something for them to fit & work. The 2HN battery is a Ordance battery and if you find one it will cost you about 150.00 dollars each to include shipping to be ship to you then you will have to buy acid and fill them up then give each one a slow charge for 24 hours. The size & CCA is a copy right and a company can't reproduce it and if a company has them they will not sell to you.

The batteries I bought for mine was at Batteries Plus in the lawn and garden tractor section. The Group size is 56-3N and to boot has good CCA's. Just go with what you feel good with.

They cost out the waso and only that you have to wait, fill & charge when you can go down to a local parts store and your on the go.

I think I would wither spend 100 dollars insteed of 250 to 300 dollars for something that last about 36 months

Guys,

Thanks for the info on the batteries. I might give Steve a call to see how much it costs for the original batteries and now I know what size to look for in a civilian battery that would be a close fit to original.

Litz :)

I haven't taken a tape messure to the autoparts store yet, but I wonder if there is an Optima that would be close to those messurements? The Optimas seem to be about the best batteries out there. IMHO
There is one nut on a M151 that is very difficult to remove.....

Optima's are overpriced garbage as far as I am concerned. I have had three red tops and one yellow top all go bad when they went dead once. They would not accept a full charge after that. I just had a brand new 2HN battery do the same thing. This was a dry charged battery less than a year ago.

They are expensive!

I use them in Jeeps that we restore. You have to have the
correct batteries for vehicles that are to be classified as "Correct".

The short time the batteries last was due to the surplus batteries
that were floating around for so long. I bought many of them
from Star Electric and they are great if you run the jeep every
day. If it sits, they go dead in about 12 months.
All of those prestolite batteries were made in the late 80's.

the batteries I have now are NEW manufactured within the last
6 months. I put a set in a jeep 5 years ago and they are still
good.

If you need something to just run and drive down the road, I suggest
using anything you can make fit. You will have a heart attack when you hear
the pricing.... Remember when gas was $1.50? :)
