Timing the Mutt

I want to check the timing but do not have the extension tool the motor pool would use.
I assume an induction timing light would not work because of the braded wire loom over the plug wires.
If I remove the # 1 wire and pull it out what do I stick in the hole inside the porcelan (sp) and attach the spring thing to the top to use the timing light. My old timing light broke so I don't want to buy an induction if it will not work for this application.

I'm not even a shade tree mechanic....somewone cut down my tree, but with help I can get buy.

I have the tool but in the past I have just cut the ends off of a standard plug wire and stuck one end in the distributor and the other end into the plug. Works fine with an inductive light. If you have an old military wire you can carfully cut a section of the braid off and use that with an inductive light.
