I pry the old ones out by hammering a flat screw driver through the center, then pop them out while twisting. I chuck a wire brush in a drill to clean up the rust and residue. Then I flush everything with a garden hose to remove latent scale and gunk. I prefer brass plugs because the don't rust. I wipe a thin coat of permatex (they make a core plug sealant also) in the core hole and tap the plug in using a socket of simular size watching so it doesn't go in crooked. I then tap the edges with a punch to seat it flush and even. Pretty easy if you prep' everything.
