Seized Engine
Has anyone ever unseized an engine by putting marvels mystry oil in the cylinders and let it soak over night? A guy I work with told me he did that on an old truck he bought and it worked. This truck was last ran in 1972 and I think he bought it about 5 years ago. Anyway I tried it and imagine that, it didn't work! I'm going to put a wrench on the harmonic balancer to see if I can break it free by hand. Going by the date on the battery (Apr 2000) in my A-, I can best guess that it probably last ran that year. Sitting idle outside in moisture rich Oregon didn't do this vehicle any favors.
Re: Seized Engine
Before you turn it over by hand, pull the plugs and fill each cylinder full of diesel fuel. Let set for about 7 days or so. Then put the cheater bar on the crank. I would guess it will turn over a lot easier and won't damage the cylinder walls as bad. I have done this with several engines and they did turn over. After a couple more weeks of soaking in diesel, the engines actually started and ran. LOL I know this is not a permant fix, but is kind of fun to see peoples faces when it works.
Just my 3 cents worth.

Re: Seized Engine
If the engine is still in the jeep why not just give it a gintle pull with a chain?
slowest mutt east of the missippi..
Re: Seized Engine
you don't really want to turn over the engine without some lube to protect the cylinder walls. Chances are at least one of the cylinders has the piston rings rusted to the cylinder itself. Penetrating oil, or some other lube should be allowed to soak into each cylinder for a couple days prior to attempting to turn it over...

Re: Seized Engine
Pour the MMO into the spark plug holes and let it sit for a few days. Over night isn't long enough. Also make sure it's not in gear when you try turning it. Makes a difference. It also wouldn't hurt to pull the valve cover and take a look at the top end and maybe give it some penitrating oil too. PB Blaster is also a good penitrating oil to put into the cylinders. A coctail of MMO and PB Blaster will do wonders...IMHO......

Re: Seized Engine
Instead of the breaker bar put it third gear four whel drive and rock it back and forth, That will put a lot more torque on the motor than a breaker bar plus it will be in both directions. I have seen some that just will not free up. I have had to pull the pan and disconnect the rod and pull the crank then hammer the piston out with a sledge and a 4 X 4. Needless to say the cylinder was a little worse for wear! These engines are easy enough to find to make it more economical to replace then go to all that trouble.

rickf,
It's more a curiousity to see if I could get this thing running after sitting as long as it did. I plan on replacing this A-2 engine with an A-1. It Looks like when the motors were swaped he was more interested in getting it running. Doesn't look to be a full A-2 conversion. Still has the A-1 full tank with fuel pump. It does however have the A-2 alternator instead of the generator and the voltage regulator on the firewall was removed.

There were a few M151a1s that were converted to the altinator byt the army. My original A1 was set up like that.
