Mutt suspension question.

Unread post by vtdeucedriver » May 25th, 2008, 7:56 am

I took the mutt for a ride and I got a question. I am familiar with the body sway as I have driven my friends mutt. But a couple of times it acts like it wants to wander on its own. This I have noted is after a bump in the road. now my question is, if the shocks are bad, will it let the suspension bounce and make the jeep seem like its steering its self from the rear???

Shocks being bad will make it want to jump lanes. Wandering is an alignment issue most likely. Check your front toe in and if that is good you may need to replace the rear suspension bushings.

Can I get a better description of jumping lanes???? Its usually associated with hitting a bump. But yea I want to check the front end but everything seems tight sofar.

By jumping lanes I would mean if you hit a bump the rear would jump right or left, right away. The front end can be tight but the toe in can be off. You want the front of the tire about 1/16-1/8 further in then the back of the tire. The rear bushings will be just about impossible to see play in. You will want to look for dry or cracking rubber around the bushings. By the way, the front shocks being bad will not have as drastic an effect in handling.

Thanks rick,

I will try a set of shocks for the rear. I will be back there some more this week when I change out the rear U-joints on the other shaft. The way you described that, sounds like it might be it and it just makes alot of sense that it would be the shocks.

Usually bad shocks will be leaking oil.

My 151 is hopping lanes and I found that my stearing gearbox is going bad. The pitman arm shaft moves up and down inside the box. Check to see if that is an issue.
There is one nut on a M151 that is very difficult to remove.....

That would definitlely cause that type of problem but it would show up as play in the steering system during a static check.

I will check everything this week as June is push month to get it all wrapped up for August. Well their is no oil leaking from any of the shocks so I will go through the suspension and get it up on jacks for a good inspection and to continue greasing the grease points.

Jeff, Keep in mind that an A1 is not going to ride like an A2. The rear suspension is drasticaly different. I am wondering if you are not just feeling the normal A1 feel? They do tend to feel a little vague in the handleing department. My A1 will wander a little bit on bumps but I don't really notice it all that much. I can let go of the steering on a flat road and go perfectly straight for a mile or more. You have long swing arms in the rear that will push out and then pull in as the pass center. This is normal and I am wondering if this is what you are feeling.

Rick,
That very well could be the case. It has been over 2 years since I drove my friends mutt. His was a A1 and I do remember it somewhat but I dont remember getting that "Uncontrolled" feeling that I have gotten in this one in such a short time. I am sure that it will be a long road for me since I am so used to the "BIG" stuff.
