Coil Spring Identification
I have searched but couldn't find a definitive answer.
Can someone list the difference between front and rear coil springs for an A1? My A1 sits crooked and I don't know if I have a proper rear spring and a front spring in the back or if I have a collapsed spring. Visually, the coils are spaced differently.
Thanks.

Re: Coil Spring Identification
There should be two long springs and two shorter springs. The short ones go up front and the long ones at the rear. It could be that you have 3x front springs and 1x rear. It could also be the case that one or more springs don't belong to the M151-series at all but I'd reckon that a previous owner replaced a rear spring with a front spring and didn't realise they were of different lengths. Here's how to tell what you've got:-
Here's the specs for the front and rear springs on the M151, M151A1 and M151A2.
Note that there are two types of "long" spring. Contrary to what you may have heard before, the M151 and M151A1 rear springs are not the same as the M151A2 rear springs.
Front Springs - M151, M151A1 and M151A2
Part No. 8754263. NSN 5360-00-678-3007
Free length (unloaded) = 11" . Replace if below 11"
Rear Springs - M151 and M151A1
Part No. 8754445. NSN 5360-00-678-2963
Free length (unloaded) = 12.75" . Replace if below 12.25"
Rear Springs - M151A2
Part No. 11639643. NSN 5360-00-176-0445
Free Length (unloaded) = 12.9". Replace if below 12.9"

Re: Coil Spring Identification
Thanks Ken! Clear and concise as usual.
Now I can determine what I have and get what I need.

Re: Coil Spring Identification
Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I have a follow-on question. Is there a spring constant difference between the rear springs for an A1 and the rear springs for the A2 or are they simply different lengths?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Coil Spring Identification
Sounds like you have no shocks on it or the wrong shocks possibly in addition to the wrong springs. Do NOT drive it like that unless you like staring at the word from the upside down position.

Re: Coil Spring Identification
Mine sat crooked and it was just a shock absorber problem. One was stuck.
so i replaced them both and the MUTT sat straight. Check this before diving deep into the springs. But yes, there is a difference between M151 and A2 springs.

Re: Coil Spring Identification
He is asking about the spring rate, I don't know for sure but from riding in both I would say they are the same.
