Windshield Glass Removal

Unread post by Cobra5 » June 10th, 2008, 6:17 pm

Have any of you guys taken the glass out of the frame? I want inspect the frame especially were the rubber seal contacts it. I'll sand, prime and paint that area before I have the glass replaced. I was told to roll the seal on the back of the frame down and push to the front with the glass.

Mine had a pretty big rock chip so when I removed the glass I used a hammer

That's basically the procedure. You have to get the back side rubber out to the front side. Be prepaired to get new glass anyway because it is very rare that the glass comes out with out breaking. Plus so many times the glass starts to delaminate and gets cloudy that it's best to get new.

Just cut it. The glass installer place can replace it. It will probably not be any good after all these years. Also if you do replace the glass remember to tell them tinted or untinted.

Also tell them how you want the seal if your doing the split glass. My place put a seal down the middle. :?

You can see it here.

I lucked-out. Replaced both glass windshields on my 1967 M151A1 and the glass guy used the existing rubber molding.

Just remember, if you do the glass removal yourself, to save it for your glass guy as a template. Seems common sense but strange things can happen around glass when you're having a couple beers and using a hammer.

k8icu,

My glass is already cracked and the rubber seal is useable but I bought a new seal. What tool did you use to roll the seal? I was going to try a 2" putty knife. Hopefully the glass will be in one piece when I get it out.

This is going to sound strange but get yourself a Craftsmen cotter pin removal tool. They work great for hose removal, glass removal and a multitude of other things. Not worth a damn for cotter pins though!

I used my glass installers tool because I use to work as a glazer....:) ... The glass will come out in one piece because it's laminated so it will stay together even if you snark (technical term) it bad. A 1-2 inch putty knife will work fine plastic if you got it. The glass installers tool is just a plastic putty knife. I recommend getting a plastic one if your going to install the glass back in yourself. Less chance of chipping or breaking the glass with the plastic or pooking through the rubber with it too. Use silicone spray...it doesn't break down the rubber then like WD-40 can. IF you don't have either soappy water works good too!

I only had the whiskey-delta on hand or I would use silicone, which will happen upon reinstallation
