Carb operation question?

Unread post by vtdeucedriver » June 14th, 2008, 6:00 pm

Ok guys I know from what I have seen about mutt operations that pulling the choke out a bit until it runs smooth. Well I was wondering if someone would take a pic of their intake on the choke and see where its set at. I pulled mine out until it ran smooth and had very little hesitation but still if I really get on it quick with a throttle response, it will stumble. Now I dont care about GPM, I just want it to run right. I am trying one ditch effort to figure out this carb before I spend the $$$$ on another only to find that the new one will do the same.

Thanks for the help.

have you checked to make sure you don't have a vacuum leak anywhere?

I wondered about this. The manual says to pull out the choke lever 1/16 of an inch and then set the choke cable so the choke is fully open, yet G in Bangkok said that all MUTTs run better with a little bit of choke and that the setting of the choke cable often causes problems you would associate with the carb. So do people normally run with the choke slightly out, or do they set the cable so that the engine is always on a little choke?

I set mine according to the manual, that way when it's warmed up, you just push it all the way in. The other way, you'll always have to fidget with the placement to get it in just the right spot to run properly when warm. just my opinion...

After it warms up, I push the choke all the way in.

My 151 A2 runs better with the choke pulled out a little bit. When I start it the first time in the am, full choke, when it catches, all the way in immediately then pulled out a bit 1/4, 1/2 inch or so. If I don't push it in when it fires, it dies and engine floods. Been like this since I've had it and the guy before me who got it from the military in 86 or so.

When you have it out and running fine...............what angle is the plate for the choke(inside the carb). I would like to compare with a normal running mutt
