Unread post by baios » July 28th, 2008, 1:15 pm

:( hey guys I have problem with my adjustment arm.....EEEE to be honest this problem is up to 1 month but no time to fix it!!! The problem is as U see in the photos the adjustment arm hits the air cleaner canister and makes a hole on it and a little oil is coming out of that!! And all the engine is getting with oil :( :( I think that maybe this adjustment arnm isn't original!!!! :? :? Any photos of that????? or any ideas of the part number of that part???

Hi, my -34P (april 1968) FIG-30, Item 2, page 84, looks like this.

This is the arm on my Mutt, it is a 1963 with the two belt system.

the part # on my arm is "8754363" the TM doesn't give a NSN for this part.
Hope this helps.

The arm should not hit the air filter, but it is very close to it. Maybe your engine sits a little bit too much to the left. But why don't you grind it just a little shorter?

This may sound dumb, but it is kind of hard to get the perspective on a computer monitor, but i just wonder, are the belts too long :?: If they are, I could see how the arm would go far enough over toward the air cleaner.

Hey Baios,

I'm with Raymond on this one. It would seem your belts are too long and the compensation of that brings the arm up a little too high, hitting the air cleaner. First possibility is shorter belts, second is to do the K&N air filter mod to eliminate the oil all together, but with all that water and mud you play in, fixing it is the only real solution. Are your belts civilian replacements?

Baios

If you have never changed the belts on your M151, I would take the old ones off and put on new ones. Your old ones could be stretched.

it never happened before and now it does and you did not touch the belts? Then rock the engine in its mounts and check if there is excessive movement or play...

I've been wondering if your motor mounts are good. If a mount goes bad it will let the engine twist a little and make contact in places where it normally wouldn't. I think Horst is thinking along those lines as well.

While doing my regular play with different carbs (tried the Holley again with little success) I looked at my engine regarding this arm. There is only about 5mm gap between the arm and the air cleaner, so it doesn't take a lot of misalignment somewhere to hit.

I never changed the mounts but changed the engine a few times. I would guess it is very easy to do. Remove the bolts, lift the engine a little bit and they should come out. I am not sure however, as said I always lifted the powerpack out completly.

But as the arm is not original anyway, it shouldn't be curved looking from above, cut it a little shorter and in addition check if the engine is securly mountend.

Baios

The belts are easy to change. Does not take much time either. The Wiki has a civilian cross reference on the belts. Or you can take them off and have them measured at the auto parts store. Make sure you get ones just a little smaller than the ones you take off. While I have never had a motor mount come loose or go bad on any vehicle I owned, back in 1982 I had a transmission mount go bad on a 1965 Ford Mustang with a 4 speed. Of course I was racing someone at the time though. Still, it made enough vibrations that you knew something serious was wrong.
