Why the Plug on top of the distributor cover ?

Unread post by joem151a2 » May 8th, 2015, 12:29 am

Why is there a 1 inch plug on top of the distributor cover ? Also I am going to take the distributor cover off to check things out inside is there anything I should worry about when taking the cover off ? Thank you...

hi

i have a special tool tad go at the hole
it make`s contact with the coil screw at the wire to the points as non electronic ignition
if the engine runs you can get dwell meter or a scoop on it
with a test lite you can see if the points opens or not to test the low voltage circuit
or to set the ignition timing by non running engine by turning it by hand (if the points go open the test lite go on )

Thank you George that makes sense now...Pretty convenient....I tried to look for it in the three manuals that I have but could not find anything...I am waiting for the mail to arrive in a few hours as a fourth manual that I ordered will probably have it in there.....I also noticed in my manuals that the Army used the same distributor cover for both points and electronic ignition....I'm going to take off the distributor cover of my 1973 M151A2 soon to see if I have points or the electronic ignition.....I am in Illinois USA thank you for your comments...I hope all is well over in beautiful Holland... :D

You do realize we have almost all the manuals free in PDF format don't you :?:

Having a hard copy of the 20 and 20p is nice also. But the nice thing about the electronic version is you can print out the pages needed and not worry about getting greasy hands all over your hard copy.

That is volume one, you need volume two to go with it. That one is TM-2320-218-20-1-2. They are dated around 82 aren't they? You really needed the TM-2320-218-20 dated 71. The one you got will work but you do need the other volume, they broke it up into two books in the later years.

Joe,

here's a photo of the Electrical Test Set, courtesy of Wes K's collection.
In the box, you can see a brass screw-in adapter (top-centre) which is the adapter which screws into that plug on top of the distributor.
There are various other adapters as part of the set.

Thanks Rick I purchased one last week from my vendor who stated there was two of them but he ran out of the one so sent me what he had and ordered me the other....I seen right away I needed more and I got it now....So many manuals.....I haven't been in an Army manual for decades and boy it sure is a reminder of how thick they are...

With a little ingenuity, you can do most of the tests without the adapter set.

I don't have too much ingenuity so I better stick with the kit...LOL...But thank you Raymond......I wish I was one of those that could fix anything with a paper clip...That's why I enjoy and admire the stories of back yard mechanics that have just basic tools and can restore their vehicles under a tree.....

here are some pics of the issue M151 tools, along with a pic of the 24 volt timing light set. this shows about 70% of all three sets.
