Hand brake

Unread post by Jerome » July 29th, 2015, 10:16 am

Hi,

I have an issue with my hand brake (M151, so first type lever). I changed the brake pad and adjusted it according to the TM, but either it is totally inefficient, or it heats up after a few kilometers and braking power fades away... Is there a way to better adjust it? Otherwise, is it possible to easily fit a M151 A2 type lever ?

Thanks,

Jerome

Don't know what influence the early lever has. But when you are saying you adjusted to the TM and it's heating up , then simply you did not do the job right. Correctly adjusted the brake band does not touch the drum at all but also is very close to it. It takes some patience with both adjuster screws to get this done.

Jerome, there's another option. The new brake-band is out-of-round. I know, I went through this problem a few years ago. I bought a brand new band and proceded to install and adjust it as per the TM. It either rubbed all the time, or didn't clamp tightly enough on the drum. Eventually, I took it off and laid it on top of the old band. It had a flat spot. Unfortunately, that's how these cheap re-makes are. It took me ages to carefully bend the new one to match the contour of the old one as I was worried about bending too much at one go....and cracking the fibre band.
Eventually I was happy with it and since then it has operated perfectly. Check yours for mis-shape.

Just as a by-the-way, the early M151 parking brake did NOT have a return spring at the drum end. This caused the lining to stay in contact with the drum and the friction caused the drum and band to heat up. The Military's remedy? An MWO was issued to install a return spring to the system. It's covered in MWO9-2320-218-20/12 Installation of Parking Brake Return Spring. If yours doesn't have a spring, you need one !

If the band is out of round could it be fixed by finding the high spot, setting the brake and use a hammer to gently work out the kinked area? Nice gentle hammer tune. Just a thought.

Jerome, you won't find that MWO. Here's what you need.
1. This is the spring along with the bracket that holds one end of the spring to the transfer:-

2. The other end of the spring goes into a hole which should be in the handbrake operating mechanism:-

3. And this is how it looks when everything is in place.

Your vehicle may be missing the spring but it should have the bracket and the hole in the handbrake operating mechanism where the other end of the spring attaches. I doubt if your vehicle escaped the MWO.
