WTB: Voltage Regulator cable...

Unread post by colkking » December 6th, 2015, 9:29 pm

Trying to rebuild my 1962 M151, and need some help.

I have the cable from the generator to the voltage regulator, but cannot find (in my jigsaw puzzle of parts that I got in a crate) anything that looks like the four-prong cable that comes out of the voltage regulator. I "think" it goes from the voltage regulator and plugs into a connector on the wiring harness labeled '25'...

Anyone have any idea what this looks like, and if anyone has one for sale? :?: :?:

Thanks!

I am pretty sure the plug you are looking for is part of the harness that goes up and through the firewall.

Hi Rick!
Not finding any four prong wires on my harness...but I have a single wire with a connector and a '25' on the metal tag that ends just about the right place. Two humongous (technical term) wires came through the firewall--one went to the passenger side, and the one I am looking at for this missing connector came towards the drivers side (I figured this out since they both had connectors for the headlights).
I fully admit that I am a product of a public school education...is there another wire/bunch of wires that come through the firewall? :?: :?:
Thanks,
kk

Ok, You are heading in the right direction. There are two bundles as you mention, the one going to the passenger side will have the horn wires, oil pressure plug, water temp plug, the distributor connector, the oil pressure safety switch plug and light wires. On the passenger side you have the horn return wire to the steering box, the light wires, and there should be one wire with a large screw on connector for the voltage regulator. It is a four pin plug but only one wire going to it. I am on a new computer and I do not have all my diagrams over here yet so I do not remember the numbers. I will look into it later and report back.

Thanks for the help, Rick!
The '25' is the horn relay, I think--so, it goes to the steering box?
I have a couple of wire ends that look like grounding wires, but nothing with a 4-prong connector on it--that is why i thought the '25' might be the connector for a voltage regulator cable...i apologize, but this is my first MUTT I am trying to resurrect...

if you have the 25 amp bread box regulator, yes there is a four prong plug that connects to it. There is a fairly heavy wire probably about a 10 or a 12 gauge that comes out of the main wiring harness just to the right of the regulator where the main wiring harness clips to the inside of the fender. This wire is #5 and it goes into the A terminal and the other three are left blank.

Thanks, Elsasser!
I see the wire with '5' on it, but it is a flat end (like a ground connector)....how do I connect this to the breadbox? I thought it would have the 4 prongs like the breadbox to mate up with it....sorry, I am not trying to be difficult--Mama didn't raise a very bright boy here. :-)

I think somebody for some reason has put a different end on there from stock. I do not remember if the part of the regulator that the coupling goes into has male or female terminals, but the coupling you need would be the opposite of the regulator and then using the right connector insert into the A terminal. I put a new harness on mine last winter and I don't remember if I had to switch the coupling from the old harness to the new one. It will be the end of the week before I get to where I store my parts. I can look to see if I have that coupler. Larry

Could you have a 60 amp A1 harness not a 25 a?
That could explain the flat terminal # 5.

Fil,
I honestly don't know...I just purchased a new front harness for the MUTT from one of the typical parts places online.
I know it is not an old M151 harness, since it has the wiring for the directionals (I capped them off with grommets).
As far as a 60 amp vs a 25 amp, would there be any other telltale signs that it is one vs the other?
If it is a 60 amp harness, will it still work for a 25 amp generator?
Sorry to be such a pain, but I am trying to learn from you guys, and I do appreciate you all taking the time with me.

Do you have a heavy 4 or 6 gauge wire coming down to the vicinity of the generator? If so it may have the 60 amp wiring.

Yup...sure does. :x
I guess this is a 60 amp harness then....can I make this work on my 25 amp system, or am i up the proverbial creek without a paddle?

There is a metal tag on the harness somewhere.
Get the number and post it.
Chances are it is an A2 harness.
A1s are very scarce and ungodly expensive.
If you have access to an alternator. Reasonably it may be the way to go.
Just some thoghts.
