Full welds intead of spot welds

Unread post by MUTT Vet » March 24th, 2009, 1:10 pm

I had a proposition from one of the techs at the weld shop on base.

I've talked to him several times before and he's seen the jeep.

He wants to know if he could use my jeep to demonstrate some welding techniques to a class of foreign students that use similiar vehciles in their military.

He suggested fully welding all the seams and joints instead of the spot welds.

I told him "if" i agreed it would be on the underside only. I didn't want the outside to change in appearance too much, he said it wouldn't change the appearance very much at all.

My only concern is that the jeep would have to be taken apart. I would make sure to oversee the tear down and build up to make sure it gets done correctly.

Also, all that coating that i put on the underside would have to get ground off at the joints.

But even with all that, is it worth it? Would fully welding all the spot welds add any strength or rigidity to the jeep?

What do you guys think?

It's your jeep Eric, but if it were my jeep that had been a part of the proposition, I'd tell him to go out onto the firing range, grab one that had been used as a target, and demonstrate all he wants. JMHO.

Maybe we could roll Ricks flat jeep out there for him to play. :D

I understand your concern at someone using a M151 as a demonstration subject, i feel the same trepidation.

I was leading towards telling him no.

But he still got me thinking; what about just in general, would making the welds solid rather than spot, strengthen anything.

Of course i would do it or better yet pay a professional that i could hold accountable.

Rick this wans't my idea, it was someone elses who was willing to do it for free!

Eric

If you want a tub with fully welded seams, then by a Growler or an Encore or a TItan. They all had fully welded seams. If I was to buy a second M151, I would buy one of the above and not worry as much about driving it in the winter with all the salt they put on the roads here in northeast Mo.

Keep in mind it will not only destroy the coating on the surface but also on the other side of the weld leaving bare metal to rust in a big hurry. There are plenty of vehicles in junkyards to be had. Also, the welding techniques on a 40 year old vehicle are quite a bit different from the techniques used for today's high strength steels. You will not gain any strength at all and you may even loose some from metal fatigue at the welds.

I would love to buy an Encore but you can't find them anymore and what is a Titan?
