aftermarket carb???

Unread post by mikes47jeep » April 28th, 2009, 5:17 pm

hi,

dose anyone know of a carb that can be used in place of the finiky zenith?

my engine runs fine, then needs choke, then has too much choke, then you need to keep a toe on the gas, then more choke then no choke at all,

its a fun dance

sounds like a clogged port. Mine was doing that, stripped it down and ran a cleaning wire through every single opening, then sprayed with carb cleaner and dried with compressed air.
Runs great now, don't even need to choke it to start in cold weather. Saved me the money of buying a new carb.

Be REAL careful of putting wires in the ports. The carb body is soft aluminum and any wire you put in it will be harder. If you open up the idle mixture port just .oo1" then you will never get it to idle correctly. I do agree that yours should be cleaned but do not stick wires in the ports. There is no direct bolt on replacement other than the Zenith or impossible to find Holley from the first couple of years the mutt was made. These carburetors will run good if they are clean, the timing is right, the valves are set right and you have no intake leaks.

I used a fine soft copper wire so as to not scratch or damage any of the interior ports. The idle mixture port was cleaned with cleaner and compressed air. I didn't want to damage anything so was very careful. After the cleaning couldn't ask for a better running little mutt now. Just tap the starter and it fires rigiht up.

Yes, no choke needed to start. When I cleaned the carb, I looked for any opening that air or fuel went through and cleaned it. Then put new gaskets in, reassembled it installed it and set the air fuel mixture and set the idle speed. It now runs like a champ, idles smooth at about 500 rpm.

Just curious, how old is the gas? Old gas will give you fits, by old I am talking anything over 6 months.

Have you tried Seafoam?

That has become my standard First Thing To Do To An Engine. Do it at night and you don't get the whole neighborhood calling the fire department . . . ;)

Hey Mike,

its real ugly, big rust hole in the battery box floor and passengers side

no seat cushions, cracked windsheild, none of the lights work

but i would bing it and drive it just for a laugh, if i had a trailer to move it on :(

carbondale PA to gilbert PA is a long long way with no trailer

I have recentkly obtained a M151. I too seem to experience more than normal carb problems and have thought of replacing the Zenith with a different carb. I am working with a friend who runs a auto repair business in town and has a lot of carburator experience. He seems to think that there are several Carter carbs out there that would work much better. Plus they would have a mechanical accelerator pump. I will post what information I come up with, along with an results if a replacement can be easily adapted.

Richard

Welcome to G838 of noone else has welcomed you. I too have seen Carter sidedraft carbs on old tractors that I thought would work. The problem for me is that the tractor junkyard near me sold off all the junk a few years ago when the price of scrap went through the roof. So now I don't have anyplace nearby to go and scrounge around and see if something could be made to work. I think either Rick or Pete Silfven over at G503 thought a tractor carb might not work, as most tractors are made to run with governor or hand throttle. They typically don't go up and down in RPMs like an automotive engine does.
