Hello Richard and welcome. I have specialized in carburetors for forty plus years. There are no American side drafts that I know of that will work because most of the American ones are industrial units and do not have accelerator pumps. There are several foreign car setups that can be adapted ad made to work, you just need to find the carb and then build the adapter. I did see a picture of a downdraft on a custom built manifold that looked interesting. It was not a very good picture so I did not get to see what the carb was from. the Zenith can be made to run quite well but everything else on the engine has to be right on also for it to work. Valve setting, timing. plug gap and condition. No vacuum leaks around the intake manifold. If everything is set right then the Zenith will perform just fine.

Raymond,
Thanks for the welcome. I have done and still do some tractor restorations.. I was not looking at a tractor carb. The same Zenith carb used on the M151 is used on fork lifts and other industrial applications, but fork lifts. True fork lifts don't have throttles, but I think the throttle cable can be made to work on the selected carb. Also, there are a number of other 4 cylinder smaller engines that used Carter carbs. Like I said, we just started this search. The key to which is to having access to the older carb catalogs and then finding what you need without paying store-front prices. The number of junk yards that still have many carbs is getting smaller, especially here in the midwest.....but some still exists....I also have some contacts in the fork lift world, thats an interesting place to visit if you have time. I'll post what ever I find out....either success or continue rebuilding and treating the Zenith with kid gloves. I can not rememnber the web site, but there is a place in Italy (??) that has lots of M151 parts that has made some mods to the Zenith and sell a modified carb that is susposed to "fix" most of the reported problem.....however the carb is about $600 US delivered. They do test each and every carb at load....so come adjusted and ready to run. So maybe a full blown replacement may be just pie in the sky!!, we'll see.

The guy in Italy is a scam when it comes to carbs! He threatened to sue me just for looking at the mods he made. He sure as hell didn't want any testing done on them! Turns out they do nothing at all beside raise the price. He does have some other interesting stuff like lockers and low range transfer cases but 3000.00 for a locker?! I'll pass. Like I said, the Zenith will run just fine as long as everything else is in order. My mutt will outrun most other mutts and it is bone stock, Ask Bob Amon over on the 503! Horst on here has driven mine and Rainman has ridden in mine so all can attest to how responsive my carb is.

I think someone here has seen those Italian wizz bang carbs and it wasn't anything special. As for side draft carbs, S&S makes a couple for racing that are tuneable and come in 2 different bore sizes. They are made for V twin motorcycles, but no reason one couldn't make one work on a M151. They even make a throttle body that will work in place of a carburetor. It would take a good fabricator and carb man to play around with it and make it work, and that is a skill I lack.

Here is S&S's catalog. Look at the fuel injection kit. Click on the page that is second row down, second from the right. I think the EFI kit is quite expensive though.

Believe me, I have thought about the Harley carbs. Too damn expensive to acquire though. The adapter would be easy.

Richard,

Welcome the the gang. Your best bet to save time and frustration would be to take Ricks advice. Since you have a friend whose a mechanic and knows carbs it just makes sense to have him rebuild the Zenith, tune up the engine, and check for intake leaks.

I found what I believe to be the final solution for all the carb problems - convert to propane. I replaced my carb/fuel system with a propane conversion kit from gotpropane.com and it runs perfectly right out of the box. My Mutt rock buggy build is posted here in this forum and here's a link to the website where I got the kit.
http://www.gotpropane.com/p4.html

The kit I used is for a Suzuki Samurai and for about $700 it came with regulator, evaporator, hoses, filter, and tank brackets - everything but the tank. It uses standart 8 or 10 gallon forklift propane tanks that can be filled anywhere. This is probably not the most inexpensive option, but it is dead reliable, bolts right on, runs cleaner, and has unbelievable throttle response. It eliminates the fuel pump and your Mutt will fire right up after sitting for 50 years (infinate shelf life). Another added benefit, and the main reason I converted to propane on my Mutt rock buggy is that it runs upside down just as good as right side up :D . If pure performance is what your after you will be hard pressed to beat propane.

I like the propane idea except for , where do you put the tank and it won't work without a tank heater below 15 or 20 degrees.

but i cant seem to get my hands on one to experiment

a carter YH its a single barrel side draft used on early corvettes and corvairs

Corvairs ALL used downdrafts. Even the turbo used a four barrel Holley. The 53 - 54 Corvette with the Blue flame six used three side drafts but I doubt you will ever find one and if you do I would bet a piece of gold the same weight would be cheaper!

hello

baios

why a other carb if you have a good org zenith it works fine

i have in all those years maybe two time`s a clocked one (can happens )
one`s a float needle leak
and once a membrane leak in 65000 mile`s

it is possible tad the mile`s a gallon will be better with a more advanced carb
a military carb is like a dwarf putting petrol in a hole
