Disc Brakes

Unread post by sherwan_88 » November 5th, 2009, 1:17 pm

Hi Fellas,

One simple question, been bugging me for a while,

How do you feel about Disc Brakes on a Mutt, not considering the Mutt as a classic, but as a normal vehicle?

It has been done but I believe it was in conjunction with a C/V axle conversion. I don't really see the need. Granted with the stuff you are in , the mud and sand, the discs would last longer but for normal use I think it is a waste of money.

I would agree that for normal use they are not worth the money.
The biggest drawback with drums is, when wet they are completely ineffective, and in normal use require a lot adjustments very frequently, on the other hand discs work very well with water, and don't need any adjusting except a few and they do clean themselves.

I have a stupid idea to mount discs, without destroying or modding any part of the 151, but i'm not sure if it will actually work.

Not new here Sher, have been done successfully without any hiccups and / or major alterations.

You are in contact with Saqib aka Janj. Consult him or better still visit him & check out his options. All you need are disc big enough to stop a Mighty Mutt :D

Hi Sherwan,
just a follow-up on what have Sam posted, you sure do have to see him :)
His (Janjua) sugestion was:
Suzuki SJ-410 brake calipers and rotors. and if you dont want to replace rims, a little modification in rotors plate can easily sort out the rims issues.

i think the photo's below were his MODIFICATIONS :?: but i'm sure that he have CV joints instead of the U-joints

Rick,
Thanks

Floyd and Raymond,
You crack me up

Czechnology,
Thanks for the info.

Sam and Percy,
I have seen Janj's Mutt up close and personal, i have seen the mods, quite genius i'd say, but those mods are not reversible.
What i have in mind is find a good pair of 280mm rotors and calipers, weld a 3/4 inch steel spacer, drill the rotors to a 5" x 5.5" lug pattern, get longer wheel bolts with longer rectangular bases, mount the rotor to the back of the hub with wheel bolts, add spacing in the backing plate, and use the backing plate to hold caliper with a bracket that uses existing brake cylinder holes. Without modding the original parts can go back to drums whenever i want.
But its just in my stupid brain, has yet to come out of it and in physical form
I'll hit the rear first, maybe but first i have to get my other project finished before i get into another one.

One thing to keep in mind, Disc brakes use different master cylinders. They require a lot more fluid pressure and overall volume.

we do have DISK BRAKE KIT CONVERSION since 1982 for M151 all series.

al you need to do is taking out your drums , instal kit items with modified hubs.
no chang eot th emaster cylinder at all keep the original.

no cut or changes on the vehicles that is still 100% original.

All connections, tubing fittins etc are in the kit included.

Whoever is saying NO NEED of this set it means has never Tried how this improve safe on on-off road drive with Mutt.

At least the two front disk are key for m151 mainly for M151A1 . A regulator is installed only on A1 on the rear brakes.

any further info visit http://www.mil-plus.com

thanks

Viktor,
I can vaguely remember you quoting someone 6500 euros for the disc brake, hey no thanks because i did the job my self for 1/24 fraction of the cost you're selling it for. Sell it to someone stupid enough to buy your stuff.
