Siren in A1?'s

Unread post by cstaup » July 8th, 2010, 8:19 am

I mounted a siren in the engine bay, (A2's have the windshield washer reservoir there). I wired this (24V) from the battery through a switch to the siren which is grounded via a mounting bolt.

I smoked the switch which was rated 50A at 24V.

Should I install: a circuit breaker or a fuse before the switch? I have an extra ignition switch that I plan to replace the NAPA switch.

Thanks, Chris

Chris, You need to find out what the amp draw is on the siren. I know the old mechanical sirens on the fire trucks used a starter switch mounted on the floor. Same type of switch we have for out starters. The siren motor is probably about the same draw as a starter so a 50 amp switch is a bit light. Find an electrician to put his Fluke tester on there as you wind up the siren and he can tell you what the draw is and then go from there. I am guessing you will need a starter switch.
