Aftermarket wheels/tires

Unread post by M2HALFTRACKBOY » September 12th, 2010, 10:21 am

I saw a post earlier about the civvy tires some of you have. After seeing a stunning video clip on Youtube of a Mutt rollover test which was initiated on a skid-pad with a minimal turn (and military tires), I'm considering going with the civilian tires on the AlleyCat.

I like the wheels most often seen on the FAVs. However, I'm concerned about getting wheels with a proper off-set. I'm also concerned about how all this effects steering (i.e. rubbing on tight turns) and fender clearances.

So, can I get some input from those of you who have blazed this trail already?

Cheers,
TJ

Don't do it. You've got to get over this roll over thing. It is very real but don't let it consume you.

Original wheels have a very negative offset. I just went and measured mine and the bolt pattern is 5 on 5.528. That should work with an earlier Ford F150, Bronco or Jeep CJ wheel. If you go with a more positive offset then you will run into a problem with the tire rotating in an arc when turning instead of rotating on the contact patch. You will also have a lot of fender interference unless you stay with smaller tires.

i have big o tires on the jeep i bought in january, and they were brand new, on 151 wheels, and it has been fine so far. i will replace them with military tires when they wear out, but that's in the future. and in that rollover picture above, are you sure that jeep isn't just doing my drill sergeant's favorite exercise, "the dying cockroach"?

Ok Rick, you da boss.

On the other hand, you don't know my wife's driving habits !

I'm a retired 30 year traffic cop and I've seen (first hand) the end result of ignorance, stupidity (and just pure bad luck) behind the wheel of an automobile.

Well, I guess I'll just bring the video to her attention. That ought to make her respect the Mutt just a little bit more.

Cheers,
TJ
