Civilian Tire size

Unread post by Outlaw » December 5th, 2012, 10:27 pm

I am looking for civilian tires to put on my m151. I have heard that a LT215/85/R16 will work. Any Mutt owners out there already venture into this? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Just to clarify I'm looking for information not actual tires.

I got scared of the 1980 issued Coopers on my Mutt and bought new production 7x16 NDCC last year. I am to much of a purist to go with anything else. It did help the ride and made me feel safer. To each his own.

Ya I understand that. I like to keep things original, but in this case I plan on driving it a lot.

I run LT 225 75 R16 6 ply rated light truck radials. If you go one size wider (75 width) you must go one size taller (225) to maintain the same radius. I have had no problems. They were on the jeep when I bought it in 1997. I run the recommended tire pressures per the military TMs for the M151a1, 20 psi front, 25 psi rear with no wear problems. I tried running the psi from the sidewall of the tire and it rode like a buckboard. I had always heard to use the psi rating of the vehicle manufacturer rather than the tire manufacturer anyway.

Raymond, I think you got your descriptions mixed up. The way the measurements go is 225 mm wide and 75% high as it is wide. So in effect the 225 is the width and the 75 is the height
The closest to the original size has been said to be the 215-85-16. Most people go with a radial. If you notice the tire I mentioned is narrower but the height percentage is higher so it will be the same rolling diameter as Raymonds tire but 10 mm narrower. The advantage of the tires that Raymond is running is that they are probably "C" rated tires so they will ride much better than the E rating of most of the 215 tires. The 215's are used on most dually pick-ups all the way up to the late 90's and further on some models. They are also pricey. I know, I have to buy six of them soon.

I've got 7.5x16 NDCC tires on my current MUTT and i drive it EVERY sinlge day that isn't raining too bad and that's just because i don't have a top on it; but i have absolutely no issue running those standard tires.

On my last MUTT i had the 7.00 R16 Michelin XZL radials and they worked like a dream, i'd like to get some more to put on my current jeep but i can't seem to find them any more.

Here's another good tire i've thought of using, they're 7.5 x 16 Interco/Springfield Express Bias M&S Traction tires:

Here's the site that has them, it's about half way down the page.

Won't the 7.5 tires rub the wheel wells? It's amazing how expensive tires are.

I have seen a lot of the Michelin 205 R 16 on the Mutt rims, I'm not sure they still make this tread.

Not in my experience. Before I had the XLZs I had the same 7.5x16 NDCC tires on the old MUTT and I only ever had rubbing on sharp turns off roading.
Same thing with the tires on my current jeep, only rubs on sharp turns when I hit a bump.

I decided on Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G052
Size 215/85/R16. I really like the way they look. Haven't got to road test them yet. I did have the guys at the tire shop tell me that the last tire took him over two hours to de-rim it!

They do look good. How much did they help the ride?

Hey Outlaw, try running them at the spec psi the military ran the bias ply cross country tires. I run 25 psi rear and 20 psi front as speced for the M151A1 with no ill effects or funny wear down the sides as usually happens with under inflated tires. At least 10,000 miles since 1997. I think the spec for the M151A2 is 25 psi front and rear. And, it rides real smooth. I think 35 psi might be a bit much for a vehicle that only weighs around 2000 pounds and is riding on 6 ply rated tires.
