K+N air filter conversion

I want to improve the performance and engine life of my M151A2. One of the obvious inconspicuous changes is to swap out the 1950's technology oil bath air filter for a modern cartridge, such as K+N. Theoretically, less restricted air flow with better small particle capture.

What does the collective wisdom suggest? Is there a how-to link responding to a previous question? (The search tools didn't give me much satisfaction.)

okay, sorry about that, but it appears muttmotorpool.com is down. I don't know if its temporary or permanent. That link was to a pictorial how to do it thread on the conversion. at least you have the filter number if you want to attempt it.

I goofled my question and some 2006 pages from this forum came up. Same link. Same negative result. But http://www.archives.org is the internet "backup". Drop the URL in their search box, and start surfing. It looks like the page is down for good.

At least this thread has the proper K+N part number.

Their US (not Canadian) website even gives an equivalency table:

It is a worthwhile mod that is easily reversible. I did the K and N filter, but others have gone the cheaper route and used the paper filter the K and N replaces. One thing I would recommend is setting the idle and idle mixture after you install. It will slightly alter your carb performance.

Doing the conversion on the air cleaner while I'm waiting to get the mutt back from paint, any ideas on removing the baffle/ plate in the top of the cleaner , pro or con? I've got pix's of doing the conversion just need to figure how to resize them to fit here

Looks good but not exactly reversible. You will not gain enough extra flow to make any difference by removing all of the baffles. What I should say is the engine will not pull enough air to utilize the extra space. The biggest restriction on these engines is the exhaust manifold and head setup.

not really worried about going back to the oil bath, I know the pro's & con's of the oil bath I just always hated them from past vehicle's, plus the K&N is easier to clean & maintain .

I would say, if you have a stock set-up, don't worry about it, it will not make any significant difference compared to the oil bath filter. Not worth it in my opinion and experience. Other than that, you can still find the info on the correct number in the Wiki, pictures are unfortunately gone however.

I do have the K&N filter installed, but I do have a fording kit and the mod helps to offset the slight decrease in performance you get with that long intake snorkel.
