Replacement fuel pump for M151A1

Unread post by Pen1311 » November 9th, 2013, 1:30 am

I just recently bought a 1964 1/2 M151A1 that has been parked for three years with a full tank of molasses. The fuel has turned everything to a nice cherry red goo..... and that is what I get for buying a vehicle without checking it out personally first. I'm in Michigan, the MUTT was in southern Texas. All well, never again.... but I regress. I have been looking at all the mod posts, and tech posts, and I have a severe head ache. Has anyone come up with a replacement mechanical fuel pump that also provides vacumn? I really want to get this MUTT running. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. :D

On my A1 I went with an in tank 24V Carter brand rotary vane electric pump. Too hard to find ethanol free gas here in the midwest where we are all supposed to be happy about turning corn into fuel and the rotary vane pump has no rubber parts to go bad.

It's noisier than I would like it to be but quite reliable and will flow fuel well even on very steep hills.

Carter # P4603HD is the one I am using.

Mounted it like this:

Then with a steel pickup line running down and a 5/16ths filter sock on the end of it.

Hello Aswayze,

I did a quick check on this pump for a friend who has an A1, but the Carter/Federal Mogul catalog says that this is an external fuel pump. Have you got yours working safely in your tank? Maybe Carter have described it wrongly....see here (Specifications):=

Kind regards....

I had head both ways on this one but the guy who had suggested it to me had been using them in tank for some time.

Mine is in tank and doing just spiffy.

Well, thanks for your responses....... so I guess NO ONE has come up with a combo mechanical pump that will fit the MUTT engine.... we shall adapt and over-come.

I used a external in line fuel pump 24v from Napa. Put a regulator in line with it for the PSI and mine runs fine.

I just bought a universal fuel pump that does not require a vacuum line. I just had to buy a switch and some wire to attach to the battery cables.

Hi, i am a new member this is my first post! I had the same problem with the fuel pump. I've a m151 a1
.To get my mutt running i bought that electrical universal external fuel pump and works excelent. Now i got a m151a2 mechanical pump, and i will adapt it in the top part of my vacumm pump. It will become only one piece ( vacumm and fuel pump).

That looks just like the 12v pumps I used on all my Suzuki Samurai's back several years ago. I wonder....
