Modern paint options for 67' M151A1

Unread post by hrod » June 30th, 2014, 4:48 pm

So this is my first post. I've just started a complete restoration of my 1967 A1 here in Colorado Springs. It's naked, striped down to the bare unibody, waiting for a few sheet metal parts to arrive today that I ordered from Guy at http://www.m151bodypanels.com/ so I can start putting them on tonight. After much reading it looks like the correct paint for my model is the federal standard 24087. In seeking that out I see most of the military vehicle suppliers sell the GILLESPIE COATINGS,INC. NON ACRYLIC ALKYD ENAMEL. As I understand it, this product is the correct luster and color, but lacks the durability of modern 2 stage paint products.

After much searching for a modern paint product I found this: https://www.tm9ordnance.com/products.asp They offer a gallon of 1968-1974 Olive Drab 24087 in a Catalyzed Urethane for $99 delivered. Before I pull the trigger on this purchase I thought I would ask if any of you have used this product and and what do you think, overall?

I think I have posted this in the right area as this is a mod from the original paint.

Looking forward to your input and I'll post pics of my project as soon as I can figure out how to do so.

Hrod

I was not aware that TM9 was making the 24087 in urethane. I know they make a good product for the WWII guys so it would seem to me that their new paint would be good also. Be sure to follow the safety precautions for spraying catalyzed urethane paint, it can be dangerous stuff. For you and those around you, ie. neighbors.

Nice thing about Gillespie is that it is also available in rattle cans. And the rattle cans match and blend in well with their regular alkyd enamel.

I am with Raymond on this one. Any dings or scratches can be touched up with no problems. On the other hand the urethane is a very tough paint and you will not get the scratches you would get on enamel. I just like the aspect of being able to paint without the forced air full respiration suit needed to paint catalyzed urethane. Enamel is a plain organic vapor respirator. Of coarse by law......................................... you are not allowed to paint anything without a DEP approved paint booth. Say's the DEP inspector as he paints his hot rod in the garage.

There is also the Behr paint option! Have heard nothing but good things about it, and have seen it in person at their fall Georgia rally. Looks really good!
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread ... -your-MV-s
Tons of info and discussions concerning it in the paint and bodywork section. Those guys love it because it gives you a true flat paint job, claims to be very durable, cheap as chips at Home Depot and Behr's "Marque" line is said to be even better. And yep, it's water based! I think you can get it in a semi gloss too.
Only problem is that there is a list of paint codes they are using but it's mostly for the 3 color CARC paints, but you can have the store scan a color sample (original paint on an NOS part) or rattle can spray painted panel with Rapco to mix your paint.
Just my 2 cents. :)
