Any information for Combat Assault Vehicle (M151A2-MOD)

Unread post by Joe_rceme » November 21st, 2014, 11:38 am

Hello everyone, I am in search of any information on the CAV M151-MOD. I have been researching this vehicle for some time and contacted TACOM and the Transportation Museum with little luck. We are able to figure the jeep were created in several different styles in a short period of time. I have some information on them but it is limited. A lot of what I was told was incorrect and false.

First and foremost I can confirm the Vehicle is not I repeat not a DELTA vehicle. This has been confirmed by the Delta community and will be glad to explain why. The thought is they were Ranger used or made to test them for combat but never used. I have several photos of the jeep in "Theater" (only ones known to exist as of right now) along with my jeep I have restored to the best I was able to with what is known. Although cant post / attach them for some reason.

Thank you anyone for the assistance.

Looked at the pictures on the 503 and it is different that the FAV, I can't say I have even seen one like that. I would almost have to say field expedient.

I have a data plate for the vehicle and I know of 2 other jeeps floating around. It is not the FAV as I have come to find out. The Data plate states:

COMBAT ASSAULT VEHICLE M151A2-MOD

I have posted pretty much anywhere I can on this jeep. No one I mean no one has a clue, I am hoping one day someone will come forward or have an idea.

I contacted Larry Vickers and he confirmed 100% its not Delta as we had all thought before. TACOM doesn't know either and have a work order for them but nothing more.

Have you contacted Ken from England? He has every Modification work order know to man plus a couple. If it is out there he will know about it.

It would be helpful if you posted pics.
I wouldnt rely on a single source for a confirmation/denial. Larry Vickers is a great guy, but he is only one set of eyeballs.
The CSM of my last unit had been the CSM for Ranger Regiment. I actually talked to him about this very topic about a year ago. He told me they never called them FAVs or CAVs, they called them gun jeeps or gun trucks. They were modified 'A2s. Whether they were what you call a CAV, or what Doyle calls a FAV, I dunno.
I recall seeing modified 'a2s myself, as 3rd Ranger Battalion used them for airfield seizure missions.
When you use the term FAV to an army guy who was around in the early 80's, he likely thinks of the old 9th ID dune buggies that were experimented with early to mid 80s. I never heard a modded 151 called a FAV until I saw Doyle's book, but I know the USMC called them that.
Post up some pics and I will shoot them to him. Maybe he can help.

I know a couple of times you have referred to the fact that you do not go to the 503 anymore and you want to see the pictures here. The problem is that it is not as easy to put pictures on this site as it is on the others. We are a little behind the times in that department. Some have linked to a thread that had directions on how to put up pictures from Photobucket but that thread is from 2009. As soon as I get a little time I am going to make up a new thread on how to post pictures from Photobucket. It is the only one I use so I cannot tell you the others work. Once I get it going then others can add in directions to the other photo hosting sites. I will try to work on that tonight.

Rick/Joe,
Not trying to be a PITA. I sincerely apologize if I came off that way. I just don't go to many sites, as I stay pretty busy. This is one I choose to frequent. And I like to websearch 151s to throw up on the sale section. And yes, I have no love for the "G". I signed up there years ago, but when the vitriol for 151 jeep owners was so quickly apparent, I cut sling load. The whole "We will throw you under the bus to save OUR historic MV" meme a few years back was the last straw for me. I like MBs, GPWs, M38s as much as the next guy. But I like our jeeps, our site, and our team better.

To put it another way, I have ridden Harley Davidson's since I was a kid. But I tend to like Japanese bike riders better because they are not pretentious, uppity, and cliquey, (If that is a word!).

Jay, thanks for the link Sir.

Joe,
I will send the pics off to a couple guys. I will also call a guy I met through my brother in law that lives just out of Tupelo, MS. He has an incredible private museum and has one or two of these.
FWIW, these vehicles sure look like what Doyle and others refers to as FAV vehicles. Interesting that your data plate/tag assigns these an actual nomenclature as CAV. Cool. We learn something new everyday.

he FAV uses a roll bar that is more of a tri-pod and does not have a rear hoop that far back. The FAV front cage welds to a piece of angle iron on the top of the dash, I can't see where these are attached.

Oh, and by the way, I was one of those that was thrown under the bus and banned from the G503 back when that flap went down. That whole thing is why this site exists today. They had a major overhaul of mods after that and things got a lot more civil over there. They eventually let me back on the forum but I do not post as much there as I used to. I have no idea what my post counts are but I think I have way more here and I have been a member there for twice as long.

I am glad you did Rick. Their loss, our gain. You are likely single-handedly responsible for getting more -151 series trucks back on the road than anyone ever.
