Radio Painting

Unread post by vtdeucedriver » November 9th, 2008, 10:20 pm

Hey all,

I am getting a dummy RT-524 that is CARC painted, I need it semi gloss. Anyone got any suggestions on how I can paint it and preserve the white lettering.

I am thinking about filling the lettering with vasoline and cleaning the surface the best i can without completely cleaning the lettering, paint it and then let it dry for a couple of days and then wipe away the vasoline and it should still be white. Anyone done this or have a better idea??

hmmm...one way might be to paint the front panel, then use a white tire marking stick, rub it over the lettering and it should fill in the depressions, go over it with a rag to clean it off the panel part...... just a thought...

I would clean the recesses where thre lettering is, blast or wire wheel. Paint it green and let the paint cure completely. I use flat white pray paint and a Q-tip as an applicator, fill in the depression with white and wipe off the excess with a rag and mineral spirits, as acetone could screw up the green. This should leave a clean white word. My $0.02.

Hi Jeff.

I have NOS semi gloss front panels, but they are a bugger to change.

Masking Fluid would work for this job.

I've known a lot of 'costumers' who use this stuff to put 'battle wear' on their boba fett helmets and such.

http://painting.about.com/od/artglossar ... gfluid.htm <-- will explain what the stuff is.

It's been a while since I played with one of these radios so I'm going from memory...but aren't the letters raised and not depressed? If they are raised then marking them after painting is easy, if depressed then filling them in is a little more difficult.

Remember the lettering is illuminessent. So a white with a slight (light) green hue or tint is better than plain white. Also a semi-gloss will look better too.
There is one nut on a M151 that is very difficult to remove.....

I wish they were raised, iy would be easier to mark, but they are embossed into the panel. I used the tire stick method like Baios just illustrated because it fills in easily and excess wipes off without too much work. Paint is better but a lot easier to mess up.

To add actual luminescence to recessed areas, try something like this: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp? ... 7b61fcc625
