GRR-5

Unread post by Rainman » September 29th, 2009, 12:47 pm

Just rec'd a gift of a GRR-5 receiver/pwr supply.

Had the local radio tech make up a pwr cord for it, as it runs on DC 6v, 12v, 24v, and 120AC. Brought it up on AC with a variac and it powered up, but with a loud hum, so the caps are being replaced this week. It is set up with part of the mobile mount, but the base that attaches to the vehicle is missing. The number of the mount is an MT-768/URR. I'd like to mount it in the 64 early Kaiser, as it's age would have allowed it to be still be vehicle mounted in the early 60's. Has the advantage of being a multiband shortwave receiver. I'll enjoy the entertainment abilities this has to offer. Found this description on a related site. "The AN/GRR-5 has been described as a Zenith TransOceanic on steroids,". Sounds like my kind of receiver. :D Anybody with a lead on the vehicle mount? My radio guy says he's only ever found one in nearly 40 years, but that was without the internet for assistance. These would have been used more commonly in M38A1's. Actual pictures to follow when I pick it up from the shop, this pic is off the net.

That's one sweet looking rig. It got the commo guy in me screaming, "I want one." But, like my Drill SGT used to say, "How does it feel to want?" :(

There on EPay from time to time along with the cables if you are looking for a Ac cable make sure you ask for one that is not brittle by that I mean the inside + & - wires you can feel them break as you bend the cable. Scott out
