Disconnected Neg post & radio still worked

Unread post by Ralph Fuller » September 30th, 2010, 6:43 pm

I disconnected the negative wire from my radio at the battery to discourage people from turning on my radio.
Apparently the radio is grounded to the MUTT body and still works.

Wouldn't that make sense for radio suppression? I know the older WWII Jeeps had ground straps EVERYWHERE! Everything was grounded to everything else.

Now if you take the positive lead off and it still works I want to be your sponsor!

Rick: You crack me up!
Jim: Are you pullin' my leg about the battery in the radio?

actually, no I'm not. While it's possible the radio still worked because its grounded ,I wouldn't be surprised that if the vehicle power went off the internal battery would still power the radio... I'm not real familiar with the backpack radios so I could be wrong, but check it out.

Hey Ralph and Moose,
Guess I'm not sure how the battery would work with the radio installed in the AM-2060. These batteries are available pretty cheap with the going rate at around $55-$60 per case of 16 ea batteries, delivered to your door. They are a little out of date, but excellent cosmetic and working condition. I have what's left of 2 cases sitting in the cool dark basement. My guess is the radio is grounded through the mount and the 24v still coming through the power cord.

Well, If the neg side of the battery is disconnected, I'm not so sure anything else being grounded is going to complete a circuit when the ground side is off. The AM-2060 is just an audio amplifier and battery eliminator, powering the backpack radio using the vehicle power. The battery is still connected internally while in the rack. It would depend on how the wiring is setup, but it might power the radio if vehicle power is lost.

He said that he had disconnected to power to the radio at the battery neg post. That does not disturb the normal ground connection to the rest of the vehicle. It would therefore provide a ground connection to the radio via different points, antenna shield and various bolts.
Had it happen on a Hawk missle carrier with an RT524 some time ago.
