PRC-77 and R-442 Installation

Unread post by mrdibbles » May 14th, 2008, 7:04 pm

Crazy weekend  I picked a real winner of a weekend to drive up to Dallas to have a friend help me with my Radio installation. It was so muddy we couldn't get around his house to the back where his storage buildings and workshops are. So... we hastily installed the radio gear under a carport with Thunder, Lightening, Wind, and Rain just trashing us. I complained about the workspace until my buddy reminded me that this was easier than doing this without a carport and working there in Chemical Gear. "It can always be worse", he said. Ok that helped a little :) Anyway I am not done, I need to install a leg for the 1029 sponson plate, install the antenna for the R-442, detail the radios and base for the R-442, and tidy up some wires. All-in-all we made some great headway, the radio gear is all working, and all was done under some crappy generally conditions!

Matt: Great timing on your installation.
I have a PRC 25 installed on my passenger side.

Now collecting parts to install a RT 524 and R442 on the driver's side

What cable and it's length is used to connect a R442 to the radio? I think a
CX 4721 does this, but the only one I've found is 10'.
Can I use the same antenna for the R442 and the RT 524?

Ralph: Jim has the operators manual that you need for the VRC 47 setup that you are talking about in the manual section.

ARMY TM 11-5820-401-10-1 see page 2-19.

The cable you need is the CX 4721. I have seen them in other lengths, maybe at Fair Radio but not sure. Otti in Italy use to have all the different cables. Maybe Matt can point you on a more direct course.

Floyd: Thanks for the quick reply.
I still need a working R442. Anybody know where I can get one?

Hey Floyd,
Tell me what I'm lookin for. Do you want one that works, or one that don't, or one that's empty? Tony Banks turns one up once in awhile, and even with no radios, he has the sponsons and the AB-15's and cables and such for an R442. I located one on ebay a few months ago and bought it untested as is, and plugged it in and turned it on and it works great. I now have 2 working R442's, one for each M151. I can ask my tech here in Ohio too, or have you give him a call. I know he has working R108's and R109's, not sure since my other working R442 came from him, and may have been his only one. I gave $200 for it. I'll check for you though.

Ralph: The price is not too bad but the shipping could stop the heart.

He ain't tryin to help her that much, with $80 S/H fees. Makes getting it for a reasonable price unreasonable.
