PRC77 RF AMP

Unread post by toadette » January 24th, 2013, 5:39 pm

I have a vehicle mounted PRC77 in my A2 and have been looking around to see if a RF Amplifier was ever made to boost the transmitting power. The only thing I could find was onYoutube under PRC77 + 30W AMP No.2 via the Japan Military Radio Club. Has anyone seen one of these and where can you get one?

Just get a 524, 50 watts on high if I remember correctly. You could probably find a linear in the 200 watt range but the problem is that the frequency controls on these radios is so sloppy you would interfere with everything within 10 channels up or down. My guess is that you would get a visit from the FCC in short order and they would not be smiling.

The amp for PRC-77's, the AM-4477/GRC, comes up on ebay occasionally, but I've never seen one actually make much of a difference while transmitting. You'd be lucky to talk 10 miles on a corner mount whip with or without one. If you really need to reach out and touch someone at a distance with a 77 or a 524, put up an RC-292 antenna. Your best solution for more transmit power as Rick mentioned, is to pick up an RT-524. There's been a dozen 524's at about every major US show the past few years. RT-246 if your going for an early 60's project.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of renewing my Ham licence and working the 6 metre band where the extra power would be useful. Seems I need to rethink my idea.
