Looking for a photo

Unread post by Bill in VA » January 18th, 2019, 10:49 am

I had a photo in my files of a soldier literally hanging off the side of a MUTT, firing an M2; I've lost it though. Would anyone have a copy or link? My google-fu is pretty weak, apparently.

Was it posted on the site here? the M2 Was mounted on the pedestal I assume? And do you remember if it was back in the Photobucket days? If it was it is probably history.

I went through all 84 of your past posts and nothing there. I am assuming it was a photo you found on here somewhere? That is going to be a tough find especially if it is back in the photobucket days.

Ralph posted this picture years ago.....but I don't think it fits your request.....
the soldier isn't hanging off of the side and he isn't firing, either. But it's the nearest thing I've got :?

That's it - the one(s) Surveyor posted! It's the bottom left corner image in "fire3"; the copy I had was just that one, and it was a little cleaner but that's definitely the image I was looking for. Thanks so much!

Thanks! Any idea where these originally came from, or what unit/time frame?

Top pictures in b/w and color I believe were all taken at the same time, same location. Looks like the soldiers swapped turns on the 50. Unknown where or when. I believe the top pictures are of soldiers since the hood appears to have white numbers of what little I can see, boots don't appear to be bloused with boot bands but tucked in, etc. (Did Marines blouse them back then with bands? Way before my time.)

Last picture, if I'm reading bumper correctly,

Wiki -Troop E, 17th Cavalry was the ground reconnaissance element of the 173d Airborne Brigade, arriving in Vietnam from Okinawa on 6 May 1965. The troop was co-located with the brigade throughout its service in Vietnam and departed on 14 August 1971.

I believe this pic was listed either 70 or 71 by memory.

Looks to me as if wearing cammo but carrying M16a1 rifles. That should narrow it down somewhat.

About the Marines blousing the boots with bands--they used a cloth-like stretchy band, later on they used springs, for lack of better terminology, as well as my lack of words in the English languge

That looks like it was a pretty fast setup, as in OH SH**!!!! The way that 151 is teetering on the berm is a less than stable firing platform so they did not have time to pick and choose. The M60 gunner is shooting a bit higher than the 50 gunner. the 16 gunner is shooting straight across and the M79 shooter appears to be aiming pretty flat so I would guess the enemy is close in which means I sure as hell would not want to be standing tall and proud behind that 50!!! As a sniper the very first thing I see in that picture is a big giant target that is not moving enough to get out of the way. The sniper would not have to be in the line of fire, he would be off to the side or further up anyway. Those guys had balls, I will give them that! Their only protection they had was the gun and the pedestal.
