Vietnamese Coast Guard

Unread post by Surveyor » December 21st, 2016, 7:16 pm

A company in my area is building boats for the DOD to be shipped overseas and used by the Vietnamese CG. I believe they had this rigged up for testing purposes.
Just seems weird having a man all exposed like that but then again who would want to tick him off?

That is a mini-gun, roughly 6000 rounds a minute. You do NOT want that pointed even generally in your direction. It is a good point in today's times about the exposed firing position. In my time it was not all that uncommon but ususally you had some sort of plate to hide behind. But look at the M-60 on a 151, no cover there at all.

yeah, but we had the steel pot and those "oh, so effective" flak jackets. i either sat on mine, or used it as a back rest cushion. i never once had that thing on under fire.

I did wear it during the frequent mortar attacks on the base when we were there but other than that it was a seat cushion. They would stop shrapnel but not bullets, hence "Flak" jackets. I think the odds of getting hit with a bullet in the upper body were quite a bit higher than flak in a firefight so we did not wear the heavy damn things on patrol.
