Thanks Matt. Any idea on the markings on the bumper? Could that give some indication of the unit?

You're welcome. Yes the letters & numbers stenciled on the front bumber (& rear bumperettes) will tell you the unit & vehicle's placement in that unit.

Here you go, Elvis....What Ralph said (he was there)

Right on!!! Thanks Ralph!! I have my eye on two 1919A4s (one is a semi, and the other is a simulator). Now that would be an interesting MUTT to show up with at a meet!!!

(plenty of scrap metal laying around in Detroit... maybe some window covers off the Highland Park Assembly Plant...)

We actually still store stuff in that facility - haven't been there in a while (15 years), but I bet it's still being used for something!!

Anyone out there have any specifics on "in country" armor up kits? That wouldn't be too hard to duplicate out of lighter material - just for looks of course (not driving in Detroit begging for a pot shot...)

Have a nice day!

I'd suggest Rich Killblane. You can reach him at: richard.e.killblane@us.army.mil
Rich is the Corps historian for US Army Transporation Command (now at Fort Lee, A.) One of his hobbies ("passions"?) is the Vietnam gun trucks and their "hill billy armor." He's quite active with the VN gun truck crew reunions and has also spent some time documenting the up-armoring of convoy security in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last couple years. He'd be my first choice as a "go to."

Elvis
Hopefully this won't cause you to "love me tender" but if you haven't been over to the steelsoldier's site (here's a link to their gun truck forum) you might want to check it out. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/gun-trucks/ Many guys who post on here are also members over there as well. Another source of info about the Vietnam gun truck concept & exprience would be the book "The hard ride" & "The hard ride part two" by James Lyles.

Also touch base with Ralph, who was CO of a transportation unit or vtdeucedriver who is big into guntrucks. As was said Ralph has "been there, done that".
