weapons list that can be mounted in a Mutt

Unread post by muttero » February 19th, 2010, 7:22 am

Hi guys,

I am notfamiliar with weapons on a mutt. Since I like how they looks like in a jeep, would like to know what are the options regarding weapons that can be installed on a mutt. Obviously there have to be reprodutions available, cause here in the old Spain, there are hard weapons restrictions. May there is a manual showing this, but can´t find one.

1. M-14 / M-16 rifles
There is a gun mount kit available for the mutt with installation instructions included.

2. M60 machine gun / 50 cal. M2HB machine gun
You will need the M4 pedestal mount and M142 cradle for the M60 and M23 cradle for the 50 cal.
There is an installation manual for the pedestal mount. Don't remember which one but I have a copy of the floor
measurements on where to drill the holes.

3. M79 Grenade Launcher
A fellow g member has one in his mutt but the mount itself is very rare.

I'll dig out the book later* but there is an image of a mutt in Vietnam (around '68-Tet offensive) armed with an M134 mini gun. Mounted on the M4 pedistal, was a Honeywell hand cranked grenade launcher.

Post Vietnam: M249 SAW, Mark19 40mm grenade launcher, M16A1/M16A2/M203.

Other nations (also) received the M151 in aid packages, there were probably quite a few forign weapons designs that were mounted on/carried by our favorite jeep. Pakistan used the M151 and also issued the MG3 (7.62 NATO version of the German MG42) for example.

* Book is "Vietnam order of battle" by Shelby L. Stanton. I mage is on page 303 bottem left hand corner. Can't really see the mutt all that well as (I believe) the photogapher's focal point was the vehicle's crew and their weapons.

Your best bet on replica weapons are the "airsoft" guns that are available. I have them for all my vehicles and it is the best choice. You will need to find the variations that are particular for the period of time you are portraying with the vehicle. example: A M16 used in Vietnam should have a triangular hand guard and a full stock, a M16 in service during the 80s or 90s would have a round hand guard and possibly a collapsible stock, current should have a picatiny rail system and other newer sights and such. These are generic rules but its the details that make the difference.

The collapsible stock was not available until late '94 or early '95 which is well after the US had replaced the 151. However, many special units used the cold commando during Vietnam. These had a 10" or 11.5" barrel and 3" shorter stock.

This is incorrect. The collapsable stock was used with the Colt model "609" which became the XM177E1 (US Army) when production of that carbine started in 1966 and ran through to '67. A friend of mine who was in the AirCav during that time, over in RVN was issued one. Go look in the "Military carbine" section of this site for more info. http://www.retroblackrifle.com for more info and pictures.

the air force used the xm177e2 type rifles also, although they had a different designator for it which I can't remember right now....GAU-5 or something like that.

I could not find any info on when the collapsible stock was added to the Commando and don't remember it from the photos and conversations with my SF predecessors. I guess we can agree that an AR with a collapsible stock should also have a short barrel.

Yes I think they were known as "GAU-5A there was also a "GAU-5B." Not sure of the difference between them though. The USAF was known to rebuild older rifles into later configurations this is why you will sometimes see a 20" A2 with an early "slab" side lower reciever. Or an M4 type w/o forward assist.

Francis is correct in that the carbines with collapsable stocks had short barrels but, depending on the branch of service and time period portrayed, the barrel length varied. The image he posted is what appears to be a Colt M607 with the "1st pattern" telescoping butt stock. The "notch" in the buttplate is where the lever to adjust said stock was located. Aberdeen Proving ground museum has a nice collection of these rifles.

Ralph mentioned the M3 Grease Gun. When I was in armorer's school in Korea in 1993 I was surprised to fine them still teaching the M3 maintenance. It seems the grease gun was still in the inventory and I was told armor units still use the M3. Not much maintenance on an M3. That block of instruction was pretty short.

I think they only reciently phased them out of service. Odd isn't it? How that weapon served for so long w/o any fan fare? Kind of thought that they would have replaced them years ago with something more modern like an MP5 or one of the 10" barrel CARs.

I have not seen any in the Army inventory but the State Department has recently started issuing M4's with 10" uppers.
