Anybody else remember using B3A C-ration cans to make a feed ramp for the M-60 in Vietnam?

Looks like things are really close. I'll have the M60 on my A2 by next weekend. Joe Scheaffer took these pictures today prior to boxing it up.

This is a replica and as such it must ship with the flash surpressor painted orange.

Why the US Govt. Chose the M60 over the Mag-58 is beyond me, back in the trials in the late 1950's. Ironic that some 40 years later they got rid of the 60 and went to the 58 in the form of the M240. I love the M60, but I loved my C&R chauchat too. I had a semi M60 for a while but never shot it, go figure. From what I know about the M60 is that it was prone to breakages and wasn't as reliable as most think, yes it did it's job in laying down lots of firepower but theres reasons we (US DOD) went to a same year design GPMG some 40 years later, because it is a superior weapon in all regards. I'd like to hear accounts of problems with them during the VN war if anyone is up for telling stories of mishaps with the "Pig."

I have a replica on my jeep too, I got it from Replicasandmodels.com, I don't know if he still sells them and for what price if he does, I paid 800 bucks for it and the top cover is real. Only lousy thing about it is the rear sight is cast alluminum, he includes two extra rear sights, for good reason all three broke over the years. I need to find a rear sight but i'm not willing to pay 175 bucks on gunbroker for one and I have yet to find a beat up one at Knob Creek, I was thinking about ordering an airsoft replacement rearsight, supposedly there all steel.

Ive probably talked to hundreds of M60 gunners both in the air and on the ground. None of them ever doubted or had major issues with the gun. If anything, most issues were caused by the environment in which anything would have a hard time functioning.

While they dont speak for everyone who ever carried an m60, like most everything Im sure a lot has to do with how well you treat/know your weapon.

I have a full auto 60 and have never had a problem with threw the thousands and thousands of rounds that have gone down it.

However, threw my short years on this planet; one thing I can be for sure on is that most people who degrade/criticize something generally have a lacking knowledge in the subject at hand. It seems most of the "stories" one hears are from people who havent had any knowledge or handling of the issue. But people are allowed to form heir own opinions regardless. Mine is that it's a nice weapons system.

Here's a good read from some vets:

I was an M60 gunner for 3 years. The Pig treats you like you treat it. That weapon (with live ammo, blanks are another story) never let me down. But I treated it like a princess...as any good gunner will.

The MAG58 (Now M240 series) is a fine weapon, no doubt about it. I am trained as a "Train the Trainer" subject matter expert guy for that weapon system by the US Army, and hold no bias either way. The '60 was based on the weapon which we can only refer to as a legend in the MG world, the MG42 (which is still in service in various forms, I must add).

As for the MAG58, I have personally seen a sandbag attached to a 100 round belt of ammo, and the weapon dragged it up to the feed tray without missing a beat. Now that is a reliable weapon.

I have countless thousands of rounds behind both weapons systems, bipod, tripod, and vehicle, and both are fine platforms. I do, however, have to say that the MAG is a better choice for a number of small reasons, but not by much more than a hair's breadth.

If someone offered me either one, I'd like the '60, for nostalgic reasons alone. I love that gun.

My M-60 has only balked when the ammo I was feeding it was crummy. There was some paki, surplus ammo that did not run well through it in belts. I ended up running them through my G-3, a mag at a time and was OK. I like my Hawg just fine. I also have an MG-42 and I like it just fine also. The main differences between the Hawg and the MG42 are the M60 has a impinging gas piston while the Mg42 is roller blowback. I really like the way the Mg42 barrel changes out. You can be prone and change it with one hand. Hard to beat that. If I were going to pick one for combat...it would prob be the MG42. The way I compromise...is I just have both. :)
