Gun safe

Unread post by rickf » November 25th, 2011, 10:21 am

I want to pick up a gun safe today and take advantage of sale prices. I know a lot of you guys have them so I am looking for some advice. I am looking at a Cannon 36 gun safe from Tractor supply for 700.00 or a Winchester 24 gun for 550.00. The Cannon will bolt to the floor but the Winchester makes no mention of that. I sort of have to decide today so chime in quick if you can. I definitely want a fire safe so don't suggest the cheapo thin steel ones. I am also limited buy the fact that not many places around me carry them, remember, this is the Republic of NJ.

I know that the safe should be bolted to wall studs because thieves knock can it over if not attached, and get into it easily from the back by ripping or sawing it open.
The safe should give a fire code/ burn time, but when i doubt go for the most expensive.

You can always "fireproof" it yourself by adding material in the inside of the safe...If theives have time to cut into the safe, then no matter what type of safe you get, the point could be moot. I would buy something in the mid range (both thickness and fire rating)...Hide it in a closet or anyplace but out in the open.

Well, Here is the one I got. I really did not need the bigger size plus I really could not afford it and the biggie, how the hell was I going to get it in the house?!!!!
This one is fire rated and can be bolted to the floor. It is going in my laundry room which has a concrete floor so I figure if it is bolted to concrete and against a wall I am good to go. These were flying out the door and they had only sold one of the others. I looked that safe up and it is a 1200.00 safe so you would think more people would be buying it.

You definitely need to screw one to the floor or wall, especially if children are ever in your house. A couple of kids hanging from the wheel on the front, and it falling on top of them could be catastrophic :!:

P.S. my safe is a Winchester that looks just like that except color.

Mine is the same size and a Winchester licensed one like yours, but 12 years older with key and combination. And mine is green. Still haven't bolted it down. It has about 12 Winchesters in it, some are those 1960s comemmoratives {John Wayne, Texas Rangers, etc} and others are shooters. Also various rifles, a 1950s Browning cased shotgun, a bunch of revolvers and 4 or 5 .45 autos 1[911A1]. Most of the long guns were my father's, the .45s I added along with some of the pistols.
When I am there, I put some of the rifles on racks all around the great room, {Its a lakeside log cabin}

It did not mention sale anywhere but the price tag on it was 699.00 so it was 150.00 off normal or maybe that is the future price. When I picked it up it was in a container outside so this was future stock. I would guess Sunday is probably it because this was all a black Friday sale thing.
Top, Is that your place in Fla. where you have the mutts?
