The Swiss invasion/Christmas came early...

Unread post by ohiomgman » December 9th, 2011, 11:41 pm

I had a Swiss 550 rifle years ago and sold it at the height of the assault rifle ban crazyness...(another collector made me a huge $$$ offer) I liked it and have regretted selling it. There is now a pretty close and affordable replacement for the SIG 550.

The SIG Sauer, 551A1, Classic, in 5.56x45. It uses the swiss style translucent magazines which hold 30 rds. They are very available and while a bit higher priced than an AR15's mag...are much better made and do not corrode/create friction locks/failures to feed. The 551A1's mags and the 556 classics are NOT interchangeable. The 556 Classic accepts AR15 mags. Which there are millions of by now...

The 551A1 seems very well manufactured. Fit and finish are superb. The sights seem very much what you would expect from a nation of sharpshooters. The trigger will need to be re-adjusted...once I have some range time on it. It seems a bit stiff. The STANAG rail makes installing optics a snap. The mags rock in the same as an AK and the release is quite similar. An adjustable gas system is a real bonus! A bayonet lug can be purchased and installed in the "ring" on the bottom of the FSB. The rifle is supplied with 2 mags, a comprehensive owners booklet, a security lock, hard case, warranty card a coupon for discounted accessories and is NOT supplied with a sling. An H&K style double point sling will fit nicely. The bolt locks open after the last shot. Very similar to an M-16. The stock locks up very solidly and seems sturdy enough for combat shooting. The barrel twist is 1x7.

They are as good as if not better than an M16A2's. Easier to make combat elevation changes...A world appart better than an M16A1. I am looking at installing an ACOG scope onto the piccatiny rail. I tried an ACOG last year on an M4 and really liked the scope. I can see why the trigger pullers in the sandbox really like them.

There is a rumor on the gun manufacturing grapevine that a new, US made receiver for those Swiss AMT's, is in the works. There are AMT kits around.....

I decided on some glass and went for what is combat tested and has proved itself in the field. A Trijicon ACOG TA 31F.

The Marines and the Soldiers seem to think pretty highly of them and that is the best endorsement I can think of. My Nephew is REAL familiar with them and when it warms up a bit he is going to give me the ACOG, "what for" course. He has multiple "Sandbox" tours and knows the ins and the outs.

And yes it has the deadly Bible Verse: John 8:12 "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

The ACOG is an excellent battle sight. I prefer the tritium reticle over the fiber optic that is much too bright in full sunlight. I used a 4x ACOG in both my Afghan tours but prefer a red dot scope for the urban environment I work in Iraq.
