Demilled Artillery piece wanted for American Legion

Unread post by Tractorhunter » August 7th, 2015, 4:45 pm

Hi Guys, I haven't been on for a year since I finished my M151A2. Got so much help the thing has been running great. Anyway, Our local American Legion Post 59 in Fredonia NY is looking for an artillery piece to display in front of the club. We don't have room for a tank or helicopter but looking for something around 20' long or so. Does anyone know the nomenclature of a smaller piece and second does anyone know the procedure to get one from the Federal Govt? Thanks, Dan

Funny you should bring this up, my post is looking to get one too!
Here's what I found out.
The post Cmdr. has to send up a letter to your states main office requesting a display piece on post letterhead and signed. They send a letter to Taacom requesting a piece. Taacom is in charge of loaning tanks and artillery. Now they keep a list of stuff nearby either just stored somewhere or old displays that need to move from old closed armories, VFWs and posts. All those tanks and displays still belong to Uncle Sam even at closed posts and such, they were only loaned and are on the books at Taacom. Those that have already been demiled are the ones you want. The ones not demiled if you choose one of those will have to be demilled at your cost. If that's the case hook up with the local NG Maneuver Area Training & Equipment Site (MATES) office and see if they will demill it for you and move it. Moving an old tank or artillery piece is great PR for local NG trans units (hint, hint). No matter what it'll be the post's responsibility to move the thing and have a pad for it. Again a few calls to important offices in your state can get the civil engineers to pour a pad for you free! Remember the power of the press, all politicians want on the front page dedicating a tank or cannon at a legion or VF post. They can pull strings for ya'!
Some posts say it's a 6-9 month process, lots of calls to the state main office keeps the gears greased and moving.

Hope this helped.

Mike, Thanks that's a good start. I didn't expect much to happen immediately. I'll get the commander to sign a letter this week and get it out. I have noticed the local state senators will run over each other to get into the paper, maybe they can help grease the wheels. Dan

Excerpt from Legion Post Cmdrs. handbook- chapter 4 or 5??

SURPLUS MILITARY EQUIPMENT
Regulations, procedures, and prices for obtaining blank ammunition surplus rifles, and other Military equipment available for donation is subject to change without notice. The Department of the Army has made major
changes.
Be advised all requests for surplus military equipment must first go through the Washington, DC, National
Headquarters Office to verify the legitimacy of the post making the request.
The Washington Office is only authorized to handle requests from chartered American Legion posts in
good standing. Once verification has been made, the Washington Office sends requests to the appropriate agencies for processing. When requests are made to Congressional offices or other military departments,
without the proper verification and endorsement, the acquisition process is greatly slowed down. Separate letters must be sent for each type of equipment being requested. If both rifles and ammunition are needed, separate letters must be sent for each type of equipment being requested. If both rifles and ammunition are needed, separate requests should be forwarded to the Washington Office as two different agencies, Rock Island, IL and Warren, MI will be handling the items.
This is a change from past handling procedures.
Requests are to be made on post letterhead and contain the following:
Post name and number, Address (not a P.O Box number)
Telephone number for all members in the post (another new change) Post commander or adjutant must sign request.
These are requirements set forth in new policies and procedures established by the Army. Any correspondence lacking any of these items will be returned to the post causing a delay in processing. Posts are reminded equipment donated by the Department of the Army to American Legion posts remain the property of the United States Army. Transfer of any equipment obtained through the Surplus Program is unauthorized without the written permission of the United States Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM).
Posts receiving surplus equipment, rifles, static display items, etc. can expect periodic inspections to assure
accuracy of information provided by the donor and compliance with the terms of this Conditional Deed of Gift,
proper storage and handling, etc. This program is to be at no cost to the government and even though posts have
paid for handling, shipping, packaging, crating, etc., the items are really just “on loan” from the Department of the
Army.
