getting cold
not having the brush guard cover today the coolant temperature would not rise above 140°...

Well, I thought the same when I had this a few weeks ago already. As I had a spare, NOS thermostat, I put it in as it only takes a few minutes. Same thing. Then I actually thought the gauge is bad. However, as a next test I let it idle but covered the grille with a piece of cardboard. Now the temperature was rising up to 160° and beyond.
Today's temperatures where a few degrees below freezing and it would not indicate more than 140° coolant temp. Radiator is filled with a normal antifreeze/water mixture.
On top of that sometimes I have a different problem when cold:
It would start without any problems and idle. But after a few minutes or miles driven, it would not idle anymore, no matter what position the choke would be in. It will then run very rough. After 10 minutes or so, in most cases, idle would come back. I had suspected carburetor icing because of the fording intake, but I have no proof that this is the case.
Any ideas ?
Maybe it just hates the cold as much as I do.

Floyd,
Yes, that's a 269C. Had been a perfect day for flying, but now everything is fogged in again.
Bill,
The tail dragger is a DO-27, the other one I think is a Fuji.
