M151A2 #2 - 4 color Desert W/ROPS

Unread post by artillerydan » February 8th, 2010, 10:51 pm

Well I thought I would share some pictures of my latest project. I bought this little jewel at an estate sale in November 2009. There were 50 odd cars from the 30s to the early 70s and everything in between. None were restored LOTS of neat stuff. But one lowly army truck (jeep) lay amongst the sea of civilian cars and trucks...... A delapidated M151A2 uncut and NO rust (actually we are unaware of this RUST thing, you from back east talk of, out here in the southwest). These were the auction photos from the auction company. I have been working on this since just before Christmas so I will have a lot of other progression pictures in short order to show. I work at a fairly fast pace sooooo. ENJOY!! :D

Nice find! It doesn't look like it has ROPPS installed. What year is it?

The ROPS was removed but still had all the holes  . so it is being restored with a NOS ROPS kit. As far as I can gather with the help of the guru is it is probably a 1978. The horn is dated 82 and the carb is 82 or 84?? so that was a bit of a bust for dating it. We used the "body number". It should have the emmision control stuff on it. It will in the final restoration pictures.

Not that you would need a heater but does it have one installed? I don't see the vent in the cowling and it's odd to see the two pin receptical installed.

It had a heater while in military service. It will have one when finished also. I will have this done for our show in March. So I will spread the photos out up till then. Right now it is at 80% complete. Need to install the NOS motor & rebuilt Trans & Transfer. This Jeep will be my "user" if you will....Something I can take out on trailrides and out in the desert. It will look great and be NOS or rebuilt throughout. The USMC M151A2 FAV I have is not condusive to family fun time off road.
As a side note I will be looking for an early (early as I can find) M151A2 to restore next year or ??? so if you know of one that maybe or is available shoot me a note. It will be a COMPLETE ground up restoration in semi gloss OD. So know it will be going to a good home.

Am I to assume that looking at your long list of vehicles, etc.......you store all this in the Super Dome ? Nice list/collection ! Seabee

To the above question.... I wish I had more space. I own a electrical & mechanical contracting business so I do have some room for my toys inside the building. Other wise they are covered up at the house. I NEED MORE COVERED "SAFE" SPACE!!! :(

Here are the pictures from durring the Christmas / New Years time frame. As you will see in this batch of photos I only had the body "lightly blasted" as I intended to just throw some paint on this and use it as a nice looking combat class type vehicle.... Well my inability to call anything "good enough" took over and the next round of pictures will show it taken all the way down and all the body work done :o

Thats the boy.... He is 14, and has obviously grown up with OD trucks everywhere. So he is into this stuff, he was down here one of the days when he did not have school and I had him and the shop guy pull the power pack assy. Not to say he's not having a good time with the A2. He told me last night he wanted to be the first person to drive it. I gave him one of the mules as "his vehicle" so he keeps asking when can we start his. :P ......Well you need to get a list of parts you need and work for some $$$$ so you can aford to buy them. Then we will start on your mule. Oh?

Great that your boy is interested. These will be memories for ever. My son still brings up things to me that I didn't remember....but to him it was important and meant something to him. Enjoy his company now.....he'll start to meet girls and ........he'll be 21 by the time you get to sit down and visit again. Seabee
