Nice! Looks odd with an A-2 winshield and grill especially with the studs on the grill for the front canvas on a desert vehicle. So are you a running an A-2 wire harness and that's the reason for the electric wipers or just because they are a better option? I've been thinking of doing the same on my A-1.

I have a friend that has an A1 that he's presently in the process of installing an A2 windshield on. Dan can you explain what you ran into with yours? Did you need new windshield brackets? His wiring is totally thrashed too and with A1 harnesses being so hard to find he's seriously considering, or should I say I am seriously considering for him, going with an A2 harness. He's already running an A2 motor. I'd appreciate any guidance you have on how to convert to the A2 windshield and electricals.

Oh and... your Mutt looks GREAT!!!!!

You have to change the cowl brackets to A-2 style....and run a hot wire to ing. switch or a dash breaker......htn

You can take the brackets off the A1 Windsheild and put them on the A2 windsheild.... That way you will not need to buy anything. I ran into this on the one I am doing now (M151A2). Sometime in US service this had the cowl and windsheild mounts changed to M151, A1, Early A2? I went to put a complete new windsheild on mine... A2 winsheild off (broken glass, holes, etc....) New A2 windsheild on.... :?   Wont fit..... Am I nuts..... A2 off A2 on.... Wasted lots of time on this one.... since the cowl brackets were all ready in place I took the "old style" ones off the bad windshield and put them on the new. :o Fit just right

FIRST .... you guys are VERY VERY OBSERVANT! :D :D

ON THE CANVAS - Dave Piezzoferrato says there is no tan canvas only green!! I will check with Beechwood but I think Dave (ODCLOTH) knows what he is talking about. I wanted matching TAN canvas but I may have to settle for green canvas - like my seats.

ON THE WINDSHIELD - Yep, I wanted the electric wipers. Not that I really needed wipers here in Sunny, hot, New Mexico. Heck, I never even take the Mutt out when it's raining or the roads are wet :D :D But I know the vacuum wipers suck and when I spoke to Mark Dodd of RAPCO he said just change out the windshield and wiper setup - so I did. this was chepaer than putting new glass n the old A1 frame and buying wiper motors! You need the A2 windshield hinges to do this - the hinges for the A2 are longer than the A1 hinges. And the rubber weatherstrip at the bottom of the windshield is also different - larger, thicker, I think! Anyway - I had the A1 windshield frame without the glass and wanted a glass so it was easier to go to the A2 replacement (complete) rather than have glass cut and installed on the other A1 frame I had. Also, I needed the wiper motors for the A2 so the A2 complete windshield solved the problem....remember you need the A2 hinges they are longer than the A1 hinges.

WIRING - yep, also changed out the harness to the A2 harness with the integral voltage regulator in the alternator. I did this because I wanted the larger generator to run a radio. No problems at all with the swap., Just removed the old outboard regulator and plugged in the new alternator. I got rid of the vacuum deal on the engine and installed the fuel pump...also installed a clear gas filter because I've had rust flakes clogging the carb prior to installing the clear filter.

BTW - had one recurring problem - the float in the carb kept sticking closed! The rubber tip on the needle valve gets stuck in the seat......a little Marvel Mystrey Oil (mixed with the gas) lubed the seat and it doesn't happen any more. A solid brass needle would also solve the problem and one of the guys here in the Roadrunner MV Convoy is tryng that fix - we both had sticking needle valves!

I can't believe that I didn't find it before with as many hours as I have spent searching online for canvas. If you or anyone else following this is interested in other options, I also found this: http://www.ahh.biz/products/Dyed_cotton ... FDC010.htm. They charge more for lighter fabric but it is another option.

You have a Desert pattern A1 with A2 windshield....... It is positively been used in national trainig center in the 80's ,It is plausible dough that some A1 saw use in later days I doubt! if you consider so you'll have to buy regular green top.... there is option to get the vinil Tan (produced in the late 90's) top made for Desert applications ( I know that TNJ Murray carries NOS sides and curtain.... I have seen in germany M151A1's with vinil tops back in the 90's just off US army DRMO they also Had a composite lights instead mounted with an elaborated Kit called European conversion
were you had templates, wiring , side signals and reflectors like late A2 's so maibeeeee..........

hope it helps if anybody knows about vinil desert tops for sale I may be interested too

1. MY windshield to cowl rubber was crap so the only rubber NOS I could find was A2...so I changed the brackets and sued the A2 rubber. A2 windshields are more available NOS too!
2. wanted decent wiper and just used the A2 harness...worked fine.
3. TAN canvas (vinyl) now available from Army Jeep Parts.....not cheap but looks great....doors available too.
4. I am also corrected that the looped wheel hubs are USMC and not Army.....
5. TAN because in the sunny southwest if you have a green M151 the sun will heat it up enough to burn you by 1:00 p.m.... TAN ones were in the Suez areain 60s and 70s so TAN is an OK though not common color.
