A few more pics
Note the AM General sticker on the valve cover.
Floor repairs
No sign of a side drain here
Here is the other one. Looks like USMC to me. Note evidence of the exploded oil filter and the A1 windshield, added to confuse the masses.Smiley face added by unknown prankster.

Re: My MUTT, then and now
The other one looks like a later model AMG, '74 or newer... yours I think is a 71 Ford. The engines were swapped around all the time.
Look at the dataplate on the engine, if its got a 68 contract date thats Ford, a 72 date would be AMG. Another clue would be the date on
the horn... look closely at the firewall, centered just under the hood, even if its been removed there should still be evidence the tag was there, that would confirm Ford at least. The AMG body tag on the trans hump is VERY thin, extra coats of paint could easily hide it. if you do find one there, don't sand it to remove the paint or you'll remove the numbers too. use a little paint stripper to clean the tag.

Re: My MUTT, then and now
interesting that this A2 (last picture) has the chalk lines like those "Barstow" ones. And it is a USMC version, correct?

Re: My MUTT, then and now
It has the Marine hubs on it. Exploded filter could be several things, rusted filter or most likely a stuck pressure relief valve in the oil pump.

Re: My MUTT, then and now
I believe it's USMC, but not sure. It's the one I traded for the mechanical work on the other one. Rick gets a cookie. It WAS the pressure relief valve according to Jim.

Re: My MUTT, then and now
Here are some close-ups of the areas in question:
Here is the Valve Cover showing the AM General sticker and date of 14 February 1972
Here is a shot of the engine data plate: 7-71 Contract Date there.
Here is the area just below the hood. I couldn't see any trace of a tag there.
And finally, here is the area to the right of the driver's floor area. I saw nothing here either.
Bob.

Re: My MUTT, then and now
same contract as my 151. I don't have any of these stickers or tags either. I suspect the USMC jeeps just did not have them. What hood number?

Re: My MUTT, then and now
The engine contract number is consistent with the AMG construction period. The Ford A2's had a '68 engine contract date. in your pic of the driver's footwell, the tag, if present, will be hidden behind the fuel lines showing in the pic. Those tags were very thin, and often came up missing but should have left some marks that they were there at one time...

Re: My MUTT, then and now
It's a NIB hood, so no help there.
I'll have to pry the fuel lines away to see what's back there.
Thanks guys.

Re: My MUTT, then and now
There were two versions of the Ford front fenders.
The distintive ones like on Dave Gargiulos and the type more commonly seen on AMG A2s.
Apparently Ford made a change after the first run becauseof problems according to Muttguru.
To: Dave and Bob
Glenn's A2 is a late Ford with fenders like an AMG.
If you see it look at the differences.
Regards
Fil

Re: My MUTT, then and now
Fil,
Good to see you're back in the game. I'm beginning to think that mine is too much of a parts pile to ever be sure what it started out as, but I'll keep looking into it. In any event, I'm stuck with 1972 AM General. It's on the title!
Bob.

I think thats probably correct. Looking at your pics again i can see the AMG body tag hiding behind the fuel line right ahead of the clamp. if you use a little paint stripper (do not sand) you'll be able to read the numbers. it'll have a long number (the body tub part#) the series of A2 (example: C151) and the assembly sequence number. If you send those numbers to Muttguru, he can give you a good idea of the date of manufacture and what the military reg# may have been.
Regarding mutt fenders, Ford had the contract dated 1968, which began as M151A1's. in 1970, The redesigned A2 began production under that same contract with the fenders that had a straight edge along the front. This proved to be problematic when traveling offroad, since mud, branches, etc tended to get caught up there, building up to the point where steering was effected. In 1971 the fix was developed which was the notched fender and was put into production. This is why you will find '71 Ford A2's with both style front fenders. Ford's contract ran out in '71, and AMG was awarded the next contract, with production starting in 1972. AMG changed the body drains from the floor (Ford) to the side panels. Thats how you can tell the difference between Ford & AMG A2's.
So, after all thats been said, it would appear you have a AMG mutt, which has had some body repair work done using metal salvaged from a earlier Ford mutt. Sorry if i got a little long winded. It's the nature of army motor pools to use whatever they had on hand to effect repairs whenever possible, so mixing/matching of parts without regard to make, model, year etc. is very common. My A2 had more A1 parts on it than A2. Its all A2 now cause I changed them out, but the army would not have cared. Enjoy your mutt, they're not called outlaw jeeps for nothing lol....

Re: My MUTT, then and now
Here are two close-ups of the center area behind the engine, under the hood and the aforementioned area near the right ankle. I stripped the paint in both areas and came up empty. Any chance the paint stripper destroyed the tags, if they were there? I did use a putty knife to gently remove the paint after the stripper was on for a few minutes.
