Vietnam Jeep Club in Action in Saigon on Sunday:-

Looking for someone to rescue

Jeeps in motion, Crazy Ivan got stuck and broke down again, it took a mutt to pull him out.

Happy as pigs in muck

Mutts do most of the rescuing

Serious mud,it was a sticky, clay based mud that stuck to anything

King of the Water as he is called, if you saw the youtube video of him submersing his jeep in a canal you will understand, he has even had it in the sea. A little crazy but a very nice guy. It is as steep as it looks:-
Image

He actually drove out of that safely then he decided to try and reverse back up the slope but got stuck so had to be rescued
Image

I even got my Jeep a little dirty
Image

The Wrangler tried it but got hung up on the ridge with no grip from his wheels, he had to be pulled forward by a mutt to gain traction.

The guys invited me to join them in a little jeep testing as they called it, the objective was to try and climb up on to the mounds of wet sticky clay. It had been raining the night before so the mounds were very sticky and slippery. A few made it to the top, Crazy Ivan with his Russian Jeep made the first hill but spent most of his time stuck in the mud on another. A few mutts made it up and used their winches to help others up. I declined as I felt my old lady was not up to it as she needs a new clutch. It was a great day, despite the rain, and a lot of fun with a good bunch of guys who love their jeeps. The only downside was it took me a couple of hours to get all that gunk off. Hope you enjoy the Photo's

I am REAL familiar with that mud. Yes it sticks to everything. Remember the 20 lb. boots?

You guys in VN sure look like you are having fun and all but don't you worry about water and subsequent corrosion starting? I guess your repair shops can handle everything so it doesn't matter.
BUT, I don't even leave my 151 outside overnight because of dew, and never, ever drive them in the rain. Call me a p u s s y {not you Rick, you can stick with Captain Sir!} but I really want those jeeps to be around 20+ years from now when I am not so my boys can drive them.

Hi TT I agree my Jeeps are my legacy to my son, I am building up a stock of spare parts to try and future proof them for him so that he can hopefully keep them well into his old age. I also plan to have each of my Jeeps stripped down to bare metal, rust treated, holes sealed, worn parts replaced and the whole kiboodle repainted and undersealed before I retire. I look at it this way, the military treated these vehicles a lot rougher than I or these guys are doing now, they were probably run 10 or 12 hr's a day through all kinds of terrain by many different drivers who only used them as tools to do a job and yet they are still here after what forty odd years, so the chance of me destroying mine within twenty years just doing just a few hours a week of heavy terrain driving is slim unless of course I end up in a situation like George, god forbid. So go on use your jeep the way it was designed to be used keep it happy make it work. :D

as is often said here, if you own a M 151 it is yours to do with as you like- and I fully agree. I wasn't being critical, just saying how I baby mine, way too much.
If you follow the posts since last july, you may recall I bought Mr D's restored A2. That one hasn't even seen the grass around my land!

The other day someone came into my garage which has a lot of nice stuff in it and immediately went over to that A2 and said Holy S..T. He looked it over for 10 minutes dumbfounded.

No problem TT I didn't take your comments as criticism I understood exactly what you meant. When I first got my mutt I felt the same but once I took it off road I learned to like it more for what it was designed to do rather than as a show piece. This is what started me thinking about what I wanted my jeeps for, it is a hell of a lot of money to spend to have them just sitting on the shelf. I liken it to myself an old man in his 60's, the less I move around the stiffer I get. Most of the Jeeps that you find lying around seized up and in a state of decay are like that through neglect and lack of use. And you guys will know quite well that if you leave anything made of metal sitting around unused long enough it will quickly corrode.

TT your Mutts looks beautiful, I mean that but like beautiful young girls they need to be taken out and flaunted and shown off which I am sure you do but a little dirt and a little water ain't going to hurt it if they have been properly primed and painted. If they were mine I would have them out on the road as often as possible wet or dry, on road and off road so that people could see them in their natural environment. When we are out with the Jeeps off road we get a lot of people stop and watch because most do not realise that these vehicle were designed for getting troops and supplies across rough terrain.

However you are absolutely right they are your Mutts and it is for you to do with them as you like and I am not criticising you for the way you prefer to keep them. I am only saying what I would do if they was mine. I would love to see your jeeps close up but I fear at my age I might drool and dribble all over them and get them wet so maybe it is better that I stay here and look from afar.  :D

John

PS. Have you considered the possibility that maybe the first thing your sons will do with our jeeps once they get them is exactly what I am doing now. I was also wondering why the guy was dumbfounded, could it possibly be because he could not understand why it is left indoors. I reckon when my boy gets the jeeps they will be given a lot harsher treatment than I am giving them, boys being boys that is.

John, good point, i think my boys will do exactly that when they get them, but I have covered.
I'll get them a swamp buggy made for the kind of 4x driving there is around my place- let em rip!
I do actually drive my 151s around, and finally found the good goggles to wearso the windshield of MrD's former jeep is now down and it will stay that way. Very cool look. Fun ride.
